But they did strengthen the 700 centreboard for a similar reason.... no cost increase either.

As Cameron says it happens on other classes too so not just RS, but I have been victim to it, as has an 800 a my club. The constant flexing of the foils seems to lead to gradual stress cracking of the foil just below the stock. Initially this is just cosmetic, and the foils can last for several more years but after a while the laminate seems to fatigue and crack leading to a failure of the foil. I keep meaning to re-build my old rudder as a spare but haven't got around to it yet. The 800 at our club tried to repair theirs with carbon and plywood inserts but it went again within a few sails. I suspect that RS could fix the problem with better layups in the area, or longitudinal stiffeners in the rudder but it would all cost time and money which of course would pass its way on to us the consumers. I suppose 7-8yrs out of a rudder isn't too bad in the scheme of things!

Rudder failure like that is not a new thing. Dunked my mum and dad sailing an enterprise in the seventies. Apparently quite common failure when holding a lot of weather helm on a planing reach

Wasn't me. I was watching safely from the balcony but yes they got towed in. It was race night. It is slightly alarming though. I just hope they had some sort of fracture there before hand.

I reckon that it quite restrained on the foul language, I'd have been a lot worse than that

The usual RS rudder failure!!
I had mine go on the 700 on a beam reach, but it didn't tear off completely. One side let go and the foam split and the laminate on the other side held it altogether albeit at 90°. I've seen a couple go on 800s as well but never as spectacularly as that. When mine went the boat violently screwed into the wind and tea-bagged me! I assume you got towed in ok? |
