Hi - I'm looking for footage of occasions that we read about so often, when the series leader decides to sail his rival down the fleet in order that they accumulate max points and fall out of contention (mainly to understand the technique and what the immortals consider to be legal). Does anyone have any links for this type of video?

If you look at team racing videos, although there are very slight differences in rules you can see the slowing process. Also if there is any footage from the RS Feva nationals last race that has just finished I understand that a lot of match racing happened in the last race to secure the title.

The Ben Ainslie Laser Olympics footage is probably as good as you'll get...

If I recall correctly there were quite a few in the medal races of the last olympics, maybe in the Finns and Lasers and possibly some others. Maybe you can find them on youtube.
I very much doubt there was a video from the merlin nationals. Edited by GybeFunny - 06 Jun 12 at 3:38pm |

Even the Feva's are doing it now?! Way to go, RYA.

Why blame the RYA?! It's a legit technique. As discussed almost ad infinitum previously to write a rule to disallow it would have some very odd and by no means welcome potential consequences. So use it if you choose...or not.
Personally I admire those with a combination of the skill and determination to achieve it.

I admire the skill, I'm not sure I admire the mindset. But that's why I'm not a national champion prrobably.
Why blame the RYA? I'm guessing they coached the sailors. Sure, it's a winning move, but do such aggressive tactics encourage participation. The Feva is a fantastic 'my first Tupperware boat' for goodness sake, not an Olympic class. Just because something is legal doesn't make it ethical. |

Interesting question. I understand where Peaky is going with this but at what point does "ethical" become "acceptable"? How many of us would sail a competitor down the fleet (if they could) in the last race to ensure a win the local club summer series? What if it was an Open Meeting? Presumably no serious sailor would criticise BA for doing what he did in the Olympics. And would you do it to secure just a podium position in a club series, Open Meeting or Championship? Maybe the tipping point is the "professional" sailor who relies on results for his sponsorship/livelihood vs the pure amateur.
