too light for the class, each and everyone is different. just because you sail something that can be built ultra light doesn't mean that everything can. try building a 25kg flying Dutchman.
I expect that most things can be built a lot lighter than they currently are but at what cost in terms of money and to the detriment of existing boats. the principal that I was alluding to was that mountain bikes are heavier than road bikes as they need more strength and it is similar to boats. oh and you seem to have your caps locks jammed on. |

great man once said "light, strong, cheap pick 2 out of the 3.
BOth the boats i own cost me less than £800 to buy. My MTB cost me next to nothing due to the way i bought it over the years but agian its not the £6k that GRF is on about. In fact most Mountain bikers dont spend any way near that much. Oh and 6in travel is not a downhill bike its a trail bike and the hammersmicdt is not auto change its planetary gears like an alfine rear hub or sturmyacher. (i appoligise for poor spelling).

I remember doing a Nationals a few years ago at Lancing ( a steep pebbly south coast beach), shared with the Seaflys. These are ( were?) heavy plywood boats with a very veed raked bow. ( a bit like the centre bow section of the V2 ) The reccomended way of getting back on shore was to point at the beach, surf in, release the board and rudder tiedowns ( swivelling foils natch ) and just run up the beach, then step out when it's dry. We didn't ( couldn't ) do it that way
![]() The boats seemed indestructible - but where are they now? ( and cherubs are still going as a class ) |

very occasionally a seafly appears on ebay. I last saw one in a shed in plas menai. Too many similar boats - kestrel, bosun, wayfarer.

Well I'm not convinced light does necessarily equal quicker.
Take the (heavy, old) 49er with its new rig, nothing seems to hold a candle to it for its size. Even at the recent ISAF womens skiff trials the smaller rigged 49FX still wiped the floor across the water with more or less every other entrant, which included a mix of very light and narrow (rebel), and light, narrow and short, (cherub) and a couple of mainstream builder options bother packing 15 years of alleged advantage over the 49er hull form, yet the 49er still came home. There's some talk that the FX might actually be quicker than the mens boat in the right conditions too. Sure we have the extremes like the foiling moth, but the weight saving there is to reduce the foiling wind speed, not necessarily to improve max speed. Besides, if we're talking outside of the conventional monohull box, then if you want to maximise ease of use, with high performance, then you need to look to multihulls and probably solid rigs delivering efficiency on a stable platform; not skiffs which essentially deliver power over an unstable one.

yep, mend boats while the sun shines. I've been waiting for this sun for ages so I can get the epoxy out.

That's because its still pretty light for its size (it was *very* light compared to its competitors at Torbole), and none of the other ladies' trial entrants were anything like as big and especially long. Edited by JimC - 25 May 12 at 11:10am |
