They are very similar; so ISAF have a choice ... pick a new design or a tried & tested one with a revised rig ...

Well. There are many excuses to defend copying.

BUT, COPY IS COPY.
Maria, why are you so aggresive on this? You'll note that several of us without any ties to RS (indeed, some have track records or being crtitical of RS) have picked apart your first post, noting that several of your points are simply untrue.

What's your stake in this? What connection do you have to the 49er?

If I were a gambling man, I'd put my bet on the tried and tested with a smaller rig, as the concept seems familiar somehow... as does the hull being rather large for the size of competitor...

I would like to see the 900 selected.  Do I think it will be? No, I think they will stick with the 9er hull.  Think of the way in which the feeder class system would work then. The girls would go 29er, 29er xx, 49er FX.  The men would go 29er, 49er FX, 49er.  Far less boats would be needed reducing costs for teams. It is the only way forward despite it not being the best boat in my eyes, mainly because it isnt black perhaps!

I worry whether lightweights will be able to get the 49fx upright in big wind, though they show it on that recent vid from FX being done, you'll notice if you look carefully that it was done in different conditions to the sailing (sheltered waters etc) Already know that the 49er with two blokes on can be a handful to right due to windage... so surely a scaled down version (ie 900) would be more suitable.

So is that the 900 dead or will rs do anymore with this boat? My original understanding was its production future dePended on being selected... Shame as its a lovely looking beast but is it a big enough differentiation from the 800 from a sales perspective?

The (very magnanimous and professional) press release from RS said no, it will not go further into production.

that is a shame.
I dod wonder if it could have spawned into an 800 turbo or something??
Shame but I guess not enough future sales to justify the investment.
