My biggest nightmare. Each time I cut it it falls apart. Heating up the end with a lighter only ensures sticky rubber for the next 2 weeks. So help is needed. So far the best solution I have come up with is to use duck tape around the cord and then cut through that. I then seal the ends with superglue. But I still need to leave the duck tape on which looks a bit crap. What does everyone else do??

I melt it with a lighter and then whip it.

Cut the rubber back a good inch or more before doing the end melting so you are only doing the cover, not the rubber. But when I remember these days I buy heat shrink tube from Maplin and do my rope and shockcord ends with that rather than tape. Much neater.

Must say if that's your biggest nightmare you must have a remarkably quiet and peaceful life: I envy you.

Mind you now we mention dreams/nightmares last night I had one in which I was racing an A class catamaran, but helming it sitting out from the handles on the launching trolley just in front of the bow. Not sure whether we were racing on water or grass... Won the race though [grin]. Goodness only knows what my subconcious is trying to tell me with that one.

Adhesive lined heat shrink is good for this.
Put it on and shrink it before cutting the cord.

If I've got a loop on the end, and I normally have, I put it over both the standing part and the rope end so it makes the whole plot neater. With shock cord I think I'd slide it over the shock cord before I cut the end neatly, then slide it down so it overlaps the shockcord by several so when I shrink it down the end of teh shring comes down to smaller than the rubber thickness.
