Not sure I'd say the class has no future because of it, but it certainly goes against what I see as being healthy for a class, which is being allowed to fit a boat out to suit the sailor, not the sponsor.

I doubt it will affect the long term future really... but yes, it is totally anal and in my opinion, factually wrong- it's a cleat, not a clutch; a clutch has an independently operated lever, this cleat system does not and the wording at the time allowed the use of any manufacturers product as long as the drill spacing was the same- which it was.
But hey ho, as they say in the link, the MPS guys checked with ISAF and ISAF are the font of all knowledge on such things.... to keep it relatively on topic, Daryl, do you think the Farr 3.7 UK Class Association will have strict supplier guidelines?

Every class has to set its own particular compromise on the rules...
You can certainly make an excellent case that the mode of operation of the Spinlock is very significantly different to a conventional two jaw cam cleat: indeed its for exactly that reason I started using one on my Cherub kite halyard back in the 90s (copied Tim Dean!). Thus if the desire of the class is that all the gear on all the boats operates in the same way - which arguably makes it easier for newcomers with coaching, bimbling tips and the like, then that's a perfactly valid reason for banning the thing. On the other hand if the classes' vision for its future includes a bit more variation then it would make sense to allow something that's "plug compatible" Personally I don't believe there's any right or wrong answer to these things and I hardly think its a game changer for the future of the class. As Farr as the 3.7 is concerned, I wouldn't have thought that level of control over the detailed fit out was appropriate for a home built boat. Edited by JimC - 09 Feb 12 at 11:00am |

The short answer to that is.... NO. Fit it out with whatever you like. Use a drum kicker if you want to be super retro! ![]() Although it maybe tricky if you wanted to fit a Temple Vang as there are max dimensions for boom diameters etc... The rules give you freedom on things like foils and rig but are pretty strict on the hull shape. But they certainly don't specify any gear manufacturer over another. |

Great little test sail in Daryl's boat this afternoon, though confess I wasn't pushing it as the ice has only recently melted on the lake, and didn't fancy swimming much.
Great boat, got to give it a try... |
