I thought you had mentioned t-foils earlier in this thread, I read the rules quickly and couldn't see anything prohibiting them. T-foils are supposed to dampen things down, which is fast, but as you say not as fun!

Coming from SMOD's the ability to chose the rig and foils etc is a big draw

That and it would end up changing the whole shooting match for the 12's, hulls, rig sizes / choices etc... etc...

I'm looking forward to the 3.7 at the dinghy show, one of the main attractions for me!

yes it's a nice way of doing things. One design hull with space for a little experimentation and tuning to your body weight.

I might of done, I remember seeing the same thing.

There is a spirit of the class rule mind. Not that I think a T-foil would be breaking that.

+1 jack

does that make any none SMOD  a 'semi development class' ?

because by the standard of

- home build possible
- choice of fit out
- choice of spars
- choice of sailmaker and cut within class rules

that would make  a lot of the none SMOD ODs 'semi development'

with reference to the spinnaker issue - it would only be the same as the Enterprise and it's symetric kite

correct me if i am wrong but this has popped up on apolloduck as a contender look a like, but looks very much to me a Farr 3.7.

with some work could be an easy step into the class.

I guess you could call all these semi development classes! was a poorly chosen word, hopefully you know what I meant.

With regards to the spinnaker I was wondering if there are plans for them to considered a class, i.e. will there be a standard size kite that people use in order for racing to be possible

Definately not a Farr!

First thing to point out with the spinnaker is that it is a bit of a non-issue.

On the mast there is only a small range in which you can put the kite block without adding spreaders etc and depending on how you do it, the pole is limited in length too. On feedback from the guys in NZ- a kite of around 10m^2 would be about right for the boat.

What I am planning on doing is finding and off the shelf kite to buy and stick on the boat. Once we have numbers, we would probably standardize the kite size and leave the design open- but I reckon most people will make it to 10m^2 anyway. That seems to be what has happened in NZ- they aren't of course racing with the kite.

I think this also has to be made clear- Firstly there is a chance we will just do what the NZ guys do and not race with kites, just keep them for out of class fleet racing. There is also a chance we will race with kites, but not in a way that would separate the class from it's roots in NZ.

Ultimately it depends on who comes into the class and what they want- as it will be all decided by those that take an interest, buys/build boats and become class members. I will be fitting a kite to mine so if we race with or without them it suits me fine. I know dave isn't planning on building a kite in initially, but it is simple to retrofit if the class do decide to go that way.

A simple browse through the class rules on the website will explain it.

Any questions feel free to PM/Post/Email me
