The cox is small and weak and wouldn't make the river bank, where as 3 strokes ane a rower will be wading out the side  Wink

The logic is- on the water each race/ training is followed behind by an umpire/ coach boat- (easier to do than with sailing) and the cox is normally wearing normal clothing- or enough to make it difficult to swim, especially in winter.

On the other hand rowers wear all-in-ones which are similar to swimming suits- and all rowers (as req'd by the ARA) have to take a swimming test, which includes escaping from a capsized hull.

On the Cam, I reckon the heavyweight men (read: tall) can probably walk from the middle on much of the river.

Hugh- I sort of see the logic there.

As an ex-rower that is a new one on me....rules have obviously changed in the last 20 years.

True. My son rows for his uni - but not until he did his swim test. I didn't ask about the capsized hull though.
Given the sewer he rows on I would have thought botulism was a bigger threat than drowning.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Yeah- I am fairly sure it is an ARA procedure, if not than it is certainly required by all clubs- I even had to do a second one after 3 years of competitive rowing when joining Henley RC.

Stretch- I wouldn't be surprised if the rules have changed in the last 20yrs, the boats certainly have, and so have the amount crews (especially colt-senior level) push themselves.

I don't know much about rowing but the eights etc. do seem have shoes bolted to the boat which crew lace themselves into, and I have seen one sink, leaving just the crew's heads above water. This seems way scary to me!!
I like to take pictures of sailing, but I'd rather be sailing!

My buoyancy aid comment was not entirely serious....it is after all up to you. Neither am I a "youth", impressionable or not. When I was a teenage sea cadet in the 50's we sailed and canoed on the Thames totally unencumbered by any safety equipment.

Tickel, you started a very interesting "aside" here - I'm learning lots about rowing!

I thought the Cox would wear a BA coz the crew throw them in at the end?

Not necessarily the clubs. If you sail on Thames Water reservoirs, for instance, its a TW regulation. I wouldn't actually sail a dinghy without one deliberately, but on our committee boat with high sides it does seem of minimal value. I have an old gas bottle inflatable type I often use on the CB in the Summer. Obviously I'm entirely confident the gas bottle still works.
