I won't be convinced on anything from Tim's results other than Tim is a fine sailor who is clearly very in tune with his chosen craft- I knew that when he was leading the European D-One series in 2010 and jumped in an RS100 at the Nationals and was half way up the fleet without previously set foot in one. What's got me less than convinced was some of the jockey results.... but hey, there's the tiger trophy and all the rest of this years events to flush through yet. As you say, the UK programme is piggy backing on regattas rather than independent class events, so plenty of opportunity to answer the RTC question. BTW- good call on declaring your commercial interest mate, fair do's n' all.

Starcross Steamer - what a brutal reaching fest !!!
http://www.starcrossyc.org.uk/race_results/StarcrossSteamer-PR-20120115-845-0.htm Charlie and Andy - thanks for the great race - hopefully next year we will get to use our kites ! Jimbo (long time - no speak) - the trapeze boats don't always get it their own way particularly over a range of conditions : http://www.starcrossyc.org.uk/race_results/series/AUTUMN11.htm Cheers Chris |

It is interesting to the D One with the Musto, as in many respects they have more in common than the 100.
The Musto is clearly an aspirational boat, offering amazing singlehanded performance in a quality and just about attainable package for serious sailors. With it's glamorous European circuit and all carbon, superb quality build the D One is also aimed as an aspirational boat I think. Whether a hiker can ever be as aspirational as a trapeze boat, I don't know, but probably. The similarities go beyond that though. Whilst they look quite different, they are very close in a primary dimensions. Same beam, very similar main sail sizes and even the Musto kite is only a couple of square metres bigger. But of course the Musto has a trapeze and is about 100 PY points quicker. Whilst PY is not relevant to how good a boat is, there is a strong indication that the Musto is better able to make use of the power it is, including being ble to fly the kite more of the time to maximise speed. That is not a criticism of the Devoti, which as I say is a fabulously built boat and probably delivers awesome W/L racing, but it clearly wasn't designed with UK puddles, or club courses, in mind. |

Whilst i agree with most of what you are saying Toby, i would question as to the Musto being able to fly its kite more of the time. But i like your comparisons and being likened to probably the best single handed skiff is no bad thing, its still early days for us but i am sure to have even 10% of the Musto success would be a great thing in todays economic gloom...

TBH it's probably got more in common with an AC34 than a 100: plenty of fawning coverage on sailing anarchy, glamourous international tour, some bloke from overseas owns them all and no-one who actually sails one owns it, people just borrow them for the events... *baboomtish!* ![]() only joking (ish). if people are buying a socking great asymmetric hiking dinghy for RTC then they need to have a long hard think. if you think about how much of a blast a laser can be on a reach with 7sqm of sail how do you possibly expect to hold onto 20-26sqm? you don't buy a 49er or a 14 for the RTC experience. what both D-one and 100 do provide though is a fantastically attainable W/L experience. they go pretty damned fast and both operate as true apparent wind machines but they're much easier to get the hang of than a MPS/700. by taking the fear out of gybing it allows you to concentrate on the tactical side of W/L racing which with a group of you is great fun.

Although tongue in cheek Andrew, first part of that post is a bit uncalled for and very in accurate...Still we could try and rejuvinate an old thread by talking about exciting new kite colour options...
![]() Seriously though your point is a valid one and echo's my earlier postings. You can use these craft RTC (100 & D-one) but they really excel on a W/L screamer. For me RTC. is fine i walk away beaming from ear to ear every week, i would prefer W/l but i don't care it was a blast anyway...

That's all true. Still leaves a gap for a singlehander with a baby asymmetric though, for those who want less of a beasting. In two man land it certainly seems that the smaller the kite, the more popular the boat.
