as for try before you by Jimbo, I would agree that they can not give you the full experience of a lifetime of ownership but its better than buying something because you like the look of it and then finding out it ain't for you at all (Gizmo anyone). I tried a 300 and just 10 mins of sailing including a capsize convinced me that buying one was the right thing to do. had it for 4 years and loved it, just got a little too portly for the thing. I'm aiming to try Rusco's D-one at wimbleball in a month or so and then you never know.....

They can be bought for less then this now Maxi, but as i second boat i understand its going to be an expensive option.

We are honest and clear in our pricing and will not run some BS offer to try and generate footfall and interest.

I will deffinately be there on the Staurday of the Phantom open as my brother is racing just need to make sure i can sleep on site (in the car) i will rig boat up on Saturday and you are welcome to take her out for as long as you like, as is Roger.

Can I just say that, unlike Jimbo, I love sailing my 100 RTC on a very restricted water. It probably not the best preparation for long beats on the circuit, but I really enjoy both types of sailing.

I'm absolutely sure the same would apply if I had a D1.

I propose therefore that whether you enjoy any particular flavour of sailing is as much about you as the boat - it's a matter of personal taste.

We have Phantoms at our club but getting one would just have been a change (from my laser) for change sake and at 80kg, I'd struggle on the circuit. But the kite adds two dimensions (sailing the beast and getting the lay line right). A trap is a non-starter where I love to sail (30 degree headers and big gusts and lulls anyone)

So anyone wondering about getting a D1 or 100, my esteemed friend Rogue names himself well - he has a soundly based opinion but that does not mean your experience would lead to the same view.

In D1 or 100, do not kid yourself that you will be able to do well without hiking like crazy when the breeze is on - just like any other hiking boat. Only grmph believes it is possible to have a non-hiking, non trapezing dinghy, but that is another story.

Clive- absolutely, each to his own n' all that.   And this is forum, which is by its nature is 'opinion based'.  But I'm far from alone in finding that sailing an asymmetric doesn't pay on a RTC course, especially with the short history of the RS100.  And it only takes passing glance at the 10 year old MPS to see that grouping up into accepting clubs and focus on class racing seems to offer a better sailing experience for this type of boat- to keep people in the fold and welcome new in too.  It's a good model, something imo the D1 needs to focus on more as it doesn't have the natural home of the RS Racing Circuit in the UK behind it.

Russ- 1) I'm not being negative about the D-One, I'm just skeptical that it would perform at the local puddles on round-the-cans courses in the UK.  This is based on experience of owning a similar boat and Musto Skiff and a Vareo beforehand- none of these are the 'hybrid' asymmetrics like the 200, 400 and more recently, the Alto  2) It's not an argument, it's a discussion with differing points of view; but just be warned, you're preaching christianity to a lapsed catholic, it's the same doctrine with a different badge unless you can prove otherwise... 3) I've got no horse in the race, just an opinion that hiking asymmetric dinghies are far more niche than either RS or Suntouched/Devoti are willing to share with the general public, but this is a rather irrelevant internet forum; I'm sure your test bunnies will love it and lap it up.

My opinions are not without balance- the saving grace for both is their own racing scene on offer- the RS100 2012 calendar is already published (and looks stronger than previous years with more geographic diversity for a UK sailor); the D-One UK calendar is not yet public, but as we understand from you, there ought to be something pretty special once it's announced in due course...  as I said previously, over to you guys to prove me wrong on the 'competitive' club racing front!  Clive proves he can do it when he uses the 10.2 rig... but then he ought to be pretty handy at club level, after all he did write the book!

Ok Jimbo:

http://www.queenmary.org.uk/SailResults10/Club%20Racing%202011/20110406_Wednesday%20Evening%20Series.htm

Queen Mary Wednesday night series. Club sailing, mixture of courses D-one win...

Circuit is sorted and i beleive published, for the UK its a mixture of regattas for this year. In final talks about inland venue and i think they have just about finalised a nationals venue.  I beleive the Eruo cup series is also just about done, subject to final sponsorship approval.

I am not preaching anything mate, to be fair i couldn't careless about your views especially as mentioned earlier you would not buy another.  We have exisisting and potential customers to keep happy.  As for Devotti and suntouched hiding any kind of Niche, thats nonsense.  How many have been sold to holiday companies as a beach screamer?  Its a racing dinghy, its not designed for anything else.  one thing is clear is the ethos behind the idea, to have fun.  Something the Uk arm of D-one sailing will try and keep intune with.
Anyway bored now, got work to do and some boat bimbling this afternoon...

Jimbo

I'm all for class racing, something the 100 is generating at a number of clubs now.

But just because you can't compete RTC in a 100 does not mean I can't  Big smile

Well Done Tim!  They are good results and a step towards proving me wrong that D-One can get in the chocolates on a RTC club series.  I'll look forward to a few more before revising opinion though.  And it's not that I wouldn't buy another, I just wouldn't buy one yet until the class has established a bit more, there's decent class racing on and the investment is safe.

BTW- I know you couldn't care less about my opinion, although your responses suggest otherwise.  In fairness my opinion isn't try to tell you anything, it's about providing a bit of balance for other folks from the kool aid since you took on the new job as the D-One pimp.  Incidently it's Devoti with one "t", probably best to spell your boss's name properly chap  LOL

p.s.... boat bimbling this afternoon, don't forget your lipstick  Wink

ahh yes, but I could... when the course favoured it.  In fairness, with the old handicap, get the course right and it was a total bandit!

LOL You've done me there pal, although i have nothing to do with Devoti myself which is apparent given my frankly appalling spelling of his name.  Luca is certainly not my Boss and i have never met the chap.  I do this for fun not financial reward, i have a day job which pays the mortgage.  Sure i guess i work for Suntouched as a demo boy (declaring a commercial interest) and i really enjoy it, talking to people about a boat i enjoy sailing and being involved in something that's really starting to gain traction.

Anyway i have work to do and had enough of this forum nonsense for a while.

On another note you wont be convinced by the results of a series at QM but you seemed pretty convinced after the result of one race at the Bloody Mary, taking snippets off a forum to make your decision????
