It's all very well building to a price, but it helps if you include all the bits that were ordered and actually supply the boats equipped as ordered. For instance, if you're building to a price, and the customer specifically ordered boats without self bailers because in university boats they're a pain to maintain and not all that helpful in slow boats sailing short races, then why would you fit them anyway? Supplying the right number of spreaders would really help too. If you're building to a price, that's no reason to get things wrong- in fact, surely it helps to get things right?

Ahem. That was, admittedly, nearly six years ago.

What's actually wrong with building down to a cost? There's a place for both cheap'n'cheerful and deluxe in this world.

A big overwhelming positive vote for Ovington from me, and I've served my time as a boat builder. They are my favourite, and the reasons behind this are;

1) Quality of lamination
2) Finish of hull
3) General quality policy
4) Never had an overweight boat from them
5) Next boat will be as good as the last
6) Service
7) Eye for detail, never seen any of the boats I've had where I've thought someones finished that job and thought "screw it, that's good enough". Can't say that for some other builders.

I haven't had a boat from Synthesize, but when they had an A-Rater at the dinghy show, was very impressed by the quality of that boat too.

Evil Smile  Surely, it has to be Laser, perfect in every way  Evil Smile

Its not like any of their boats are built too heavily, down to a cost, as if it were still the 70's, or anything like that.

Oh, actually...  Lamp

I'll get my coat...

Well, Rondar have done  great job producing hundreds of Fireflies for students to trash at a reasonable price, and are now exporting them to America, so whilst they may not be making beautiful veneer covered boats, they are certainly doing what they do very well.

There is a reason Rondar haven't been mentioned! I personally haven't had a very good experience with their build quality recently on a team racing order of 6 fireflys..

I surprised nobody else has mentioned McConaghy as well

Thought the Yanks rated Ronadr, or at least used to, for the 5o5s and for those Viper keel boats?

Ovington produce the best boats i've found with the whole package being great. If i could afford a new boat they would be my first choice.

If i was local to weymouth as well RMW would be a great choice built loads of 14s i've sailed on and have been great boats
