I'm glad you enjoyed the local hospitality at the Dash Rodney! Why on earth were you locked out for 1/2 an hour????

'Sock puppet' did I say that? Confused

Some of us went to our hotel before the bun fight and when we returned the gates were locked.  It took half an hour to get the attention of someone to allow us access.  During the time we tried everything including climbing the gate to try and open it by walking and even running past the sensor.  In the end a member managed to get us in but, as I remember, all the cars had to keep close to prevent the gate shutting again before we were all in.

I hope it wasn't my reputation that caused them to try to keep me out!!

Did I mention the beer?

no, that's was in reference to the OP's lack of recent comment.

Regarding re-entry into Draycote after hours.... Scaling the barriers is one way in... there are also hidden footpaths that take you around the back of the lake apparently, although you need to be careful as there was a spate of 'dogging' going on not so long ago. I would just like to confirm that there was no truth in the rumours that the former or current committee members were actively involved in said activity, but I wouldn't be so sure about the local Fireball fleet.

My sailing club only has Solos and Lasers as individual classes, plus a large Handicap class, we in the latter are treated like second class citizens, but how would a former second row forward fit in our one design fleets? Not very well I think. But this does not stop the endless, pointless rubbish from our committee to the point of exclusion of events not related to those classes. I enjoy sailing against other Finns and travel as far as the USA to do it, but I also enjoy my handicap races and Saturday training informal racing, just leave us to enjoy ourselves.

Lets all put our names in a hat and draw lots, that'll save all the work.

At what point in my post did I say I wasn't going to do any work to help find the right number.

I'm just trying to find out the formula they have used to come up with the number they did, and why it differs from the first number I was given in the same series of races.

Other than that my point is a moral / philosophical one about the validity of a 'race' where the system is not consistently applied over the enterents, for reasons like you state above.

I can't think of any other SPORT that accepts that as a norm.

I'm sure someone will come along and enlighten me to one as soon as I have pressed send!

1016 and 1005 is a change of 1.09%.
Hardly earth shattering, what was the spread in any of the 'class' fleets at these events?

Why is anyone getting excited about a trapeze boat with a 4 digit handicap?

Is the wonderboat no faster than a blaze or a finn?

I'm not getting excited, it just a simple question. That helps me understand more about the boat. It's not a 'wounder boat'. In fact unusually I am promoting the boat as slower than people are suggesting it is. That's my point. But the Farr is a great boat to sail. And especially for youth to learn to trapeze on. It's not that fast, it's pretty stable, but is very skippy and responsive.

My other point is quite separate from trying to understand how and why. And that is concerned with the legitimacy of a 'race' when some of the competitors are not racing on equal terms.

If you don't like to talk about such things you don't have to, you know.

I'm pretty sure there won't be a formula as to how your 3.7 handicap was worked out - it will have been done by looking at a picture of the boat and sticking a finger in the air...

As for your question about any other sport doing as we do, I can't think of any other sport which tries to mix things up as much. Can you imagine handicapping a race bike, a commuter cycle, a folding bike, a BMX, a Penny farthing and a kids bike with stablizers and then setting them all off and finding a winner at the end? What we do makes no sense at all.
