I wouldn't rule out the 49er with the smaller rig, I'd actually put money on that one getting it.

I would have to agree. The 2nd hand market for old rig 49ers at present is cheap. Add to that a new smaller rig, I'd imagine the combined cost would still be far cheaper then a brand new RS900.

However, I'm not taking anything away from the 900. It looks a fantastic boat, fast too. My only gripe would be the kicker and cunno controls leading up the middle of the wing. My concern would be in maybe particularly bumpy conditions, you wouldn't want to get your foot stuck under there in a gybe say.

Is there any particular reason for having them there, besides the possibility of the helm adjusting them?

My biggest concern would be capsize recovery. Lightweight crews struggle with the 49er in heavy seas.

I think the tube wings of the Aura will make it much easier to right when it cuts up rough ...

Based on my experience, the 49er isn't that difficult to right with the right technique. I can always do it with just me on the board, and my crew, who happens to be female, finds it pretty easy too. Easy to get in due to the low free board and buoyancy in the stern. The one boat we found an absolute pain was the 14, higher freeboard and low buoyancy. Plus very cluttered when you do eventually get on board. To be frank, if you don't have the right technique that would work with the 9er, your going to struggle with any of these boats because it's all about getting the rig to right the boat for you.

I can see history repeating itself as regard the skiff selection. The reasons the radial was seleted for the female single hander will push it towards a 49er with a smaller rig. You already have good set up with CNC mould tools and the right controls in place. Sail supplier same as the 49er and you have a good history of product development since the middle 90s. Watched the Youtube video of the 900 and she looked good, but it will be all the things like foil design and arrangement that may stack up. My first spot was I'd want a dagger board rudder on the 900 and the missus said it's kicking up a fair ammount of drag compared to the 9er based on the wake of the rudder. Then it would be control lines led forward as opposed to in the middle, etc. All very little things and if you are going into this open minded, without years of bias and preference, probably wouldn't spot it. Looking forward to Ally Pally this year, got 4 must see new boats already, before you even consider what's going on with the development classes.

as was mentioned in the report the final rudder will be a dagger style thing. in fact they were testing a dagger yesterday while i was checking to see if my boat had blown away during the gales... (thankfully not)

Controls in the middle of the wings will be an improvement on them being led to the front.
Adjusting settings on spreader legs and downwind on most modern boats is a nightmare as you just can't get forward to adjust, and adjustments dont only take place upwind. Looking at the 900 the placement is perfect for crews front hand downwind and either their back hand or the helms forward hand upwind.
I'd say its development moving things forward.

yep, that was the feedback we got from some of the 49er lot - the "trip over it when going into gybe" worry has not been an issue - the lines are only a few mm off the deck at the point the crew runs over them...
On light crews righting the 49er - the issue appears to be if inverted it is hard (or impossible if you listen to the 2 900 girls mentioned that tried it in a 49er) to sink the wing enough to start it coming up or get the wind under it to help. The 900 wings are smaller and less bouyant.....

Interestingly, opposite to trend in B14's where old boats had them central, but moving them forward was favoured.

Meh, maybe it's a horses for courses thing. I like them on the front of the wings on my boat but also liked having them on the end of the sheets back on the old 5 tonner. Hate having anything fixed towards the aft of the boat, we had foil controls on the aft leg of the wings on the 14 and absolutely hated that. In the lighter stuff, like having it on the front of the wings purely from the point of view everything is up front in the boat and no reason to head backwards in the boat.
