Dear All,
As Racing Secretary I am tasked again with calculating Club Champion. I have inherited a system that seems to favour attendance over attainment. I am considering applying a different method of calculation and would welcome your experiences on this subject. Regards, Andrew

We don't have one as I guess it can be too subjective. I also guess this could take up hours of your time at a committee meeting discussing this. I certainly would not accept making a sole decision on this unless there is some mathematics behind it. So what about about a points based system
1 point per race started
5 points per race win, 4 for second etc
1 point per duty completed
etc

pick the top ten potentials... line them up with a pint at the bar each, first one to finish it and turn it up on their head is the winner.

We have a "champion Helm" race every Sunday through out the season. 40% of results to count.
We also tried a super series awarding points for place in club trophies and series http://www.balasc.org.uk/PDF/SuperSeriesRules.pdf The same person won the Champion helm and the super series...

Please tell me that this means you're setting out criteria for this year, not retrospectively choosing one from last year's results? In the past, I've been in a club that essentially had two "champions" (plus youth). One was for a one-weekend club regatta (does have volunteer difficulties, plus if you've got lots of classes you'll never find a weekend without a clash, so don't even try) and one that used all the main Sunday series results (four series through the year) with something of an emphasis on actually turning up regularly. |

We find at EYC that in each fleet there is usually a clear champion over the year. These include EOD, slow, medium and fast handicap champion as well as cadet champion (taken from cadet week). These people all compete in the Champion of Champions cup, which takes place over a weekend in evenly matched boats (e.g. RS200s, lasers or topazes), on a rota over the years so one fleet doesn't gain too much advantage. Names are drawn out of a hat for who will sail which boat and people swap around each race. However, sometimes the results are skewed by people not being able to make the date, so we have started to arrange the races according to the dates people can do. Since the process has set SIs and everyone is aware of the criteria, the club champion is generally the person that is actually the best sailor, a v. fair result.

Forgot to mention: The one gripe I have with the system is that crews are unaccounted for, and with skiffs and many other 2 man boats, it is the crew who can be the better sailor in the boat!

Well, thanks for the responses so far - quite diverse! As a Phantom sailor, I suppose the bar-based selection process should be favoured! This will be for the coming season - I am stuck with the method for last year of course!
I like the high points for a win method that still recognises attendance and this was the sort of system I had in mind. I may make a quick spreadsheet just to see how this would bias results in practice. Thanks to all. Andrew

At Hunts we have a selected 8 events through the year (ranging from long series such as out Wednesday evening twilight series) down to 1 or 2 day events. From these your best 4 results counts.
It is not perfect as some of the 'better' sailor often do not do enough events to 'qualify' and end up carry an effective DNC. It works quite well and as the events are at different times of years and different lengths it tends to cover all conditions and courses (good and bad). Consistency is key though.

In our club the person with the lowest score over all the classes gets it the only problem is in some ways sometimes the best sailors do not win and we have the same as you with the person who turns up at every weekend and sails wins but then again thats what matters more people on the water
