I've had several Vortex's and they are very
good. Compared to the Musto and 700 they are much easier to sail. Very stable
and fast. 20 plus kts recorded on many ocaitions. They do very well at Grimwith
as they have the largest fleet of 20 plus. Always windy up there. Why would you
want a 100 or D1 hiking boat when trapizing on a mile beat is so much easier. I
have a contender which is great on the beats and reaches but so boring on the
run. Price wise, the vortex class is looking to rebuild and 7500 to 8000 for the
asymmetric is cheap compared to a Musto at 10g.

Better get one quick before the price rises with the new class then!
I agree with the hiking point as I would definitely go with the nice comfy trapeze Edited by Ginge - 03 Jan 12 at 9:52pm |

Agree with you re trapezing and agree also that it's easier to sail but it's that, that I like of a dinghy, the amount of feel and responsiveness that you do not get with the vortex! It's a unique thing and you carnt really say its caught on as other manufactures would have made variations.
In my opinion. :)

For the 10 k i would rather have a new 600 sod that hiking game had enough of that and i dont think my knees could put up with much more.
As for clubs not allowing cats a agree some clubs dont some do but do you class it as a cat as its only as wide as say for example of laser 5000 ? |

You would have to check out the Vortex site. No longer part of laser, with permissions from boat designers etc, all is in place to get things in motion. Why....... why not. When you think there is a big gap in the market for a single handed trapizing asy. Sold over 200 in the 2 years they sold for and since the asy was added, more than half have converted. 2nd hand market is hard to find as they sell so quickly.

Hmmm, chosing a Vortex over a Contender or MPS would be like being on Strictly and choosing Anne Widdecombe over Holly Valance as your dance partner. Some rarely seen archive photos of the Vortex's development...

Oh, and not forgetting this rare shot of some of the early kite launching tube thingies which failed Laser's stringent quality control standards...
