The battern pocket eyelets on my Dart main sail are made from aluminium and have reacted with the salt and are now starting to crumble. I therefore want to replace them before the battern tension rips the sail.
First off is this fairly easy to do or would you only trust it to a sail loft and secondly would you go for brass eyelets as a replacement. The sails are not near new but do have plenty of life left in them for my use as i don't go racing.
Cheers

I would get a sailmaker to do it, I wouldn't want to risk damaging a sail for it.

For what most sail makers (or boat cover makers) will charge you to replace them I would let them do it. Much less hassle and you know it will be done well.

Take it to a decent sailmakers and ask them to do it. Much less hassle and they'll make good job of it. Plus, if it goes wrong then you can blame them and not you! ;)

The eyelets tend to be nickel plated and yes as you've noticed, they corrode. Sadly the brass ones won't actually fair you much better. They just corrode in a slightly different colour.
If you were to do it you would need both the closing tools, which aren't cheap. Better off just taking it to your nearest sail maker. Where abouts are you? Doug H
