Had a look at the new RS900 that RS are trying to get selected for the games. Looks like a nice piece of kit and should suit a lot of husband and wife teams or lightweights who want performance. What do you guys think will wind the selection process?

I think it looks bloody great, especially in the dark grey/black.  Well done RS.  But as the 800 is a light weights (relatively speaking) boat, what will this do to the fleets? if anything?

I really hope the colour is a coincidence, as whilst it is a good look (rather than normal RS off-white), it is rather similar to that of the Ovington Aura. One would hate to think that they've been, um, "inspired" by the Ovi boat.

nice touch with the Brazil flag on the main Clap

Weight equalisation starts at a combined crew weight of 136kg for an 8. Not exactly light weight from the 'fairer sex' persepective.

As I understand it, the 9 will only go into production if it gets selected...

We thought someone would spot the colour! Great minds I guess.. the RS900 was commissioned in Charcoal long before we saw the Aura!

The 800 is without a doubt a relative lightweights boat.

The 900 (or whatever else is selected) will take away the current influx of all-girl teams from the 800, but beyond that I don't see it having a massive impact on the existing 800 fleet.

I really wasn't trying to provoke a negative reaction; it was a general naive question.  As far as i have always been concerned the 800 was a lightweight’s boat despite what the rules say about weight equalization, therefore i thought it may fall into some kind of competition.

Topper used grey and pink in the 80's, didn't they?

The issue as a his'n'hers boat may be whether the crew is allowed to pump the main uphill.
Some  couples seem to see this as a major plus point for the current ruleset in the 800.
Make a huge difference to the crew's job in some cats I believe?

Doesn't stop a couple enjoying the boat, but limits competitiveness.

It does look a nice boat, as do most of the candidate boats.

It looks good, and I particularly like the run through wings.   What's got to be avoided with whichever boat that gets the slot is any kind of need for a disparity in size between helm and crew.  The problem with the 470 as a women's boat is that the crew really does need to be pretty tall and there just aren't many women around that are that height, leading to a shortage in crews.  This boat really does need to be achievable for the very fit but average sized female sailor.  There aren't enough female sailors around anyway, so it needs to keep its options as open as possible.

Grey and purple would be nice....
the same, but different...
