mate- that's 'cos Russ is employing a rather old, but effective technique he no doubt learned back when God was a lad. Of course, if you'd turned up to your MPS training with the right head on, they'd have also recommended it to you too... but I guess it's best just to wear your windsurf harness on upside down and call them a bunch of ladyboy gender-benders...

Somone started sporting such a thing in the b14 fleet a couple of years ago (to help the helm when doing the tack line or if they trip/slip whilst tacking and gybing and drop the tillers), it was ruled legal (rather, it wasn't judged to break class rules). Two varients- either a line from each end of the transom bar to the end of the tiller, or (slightly less effective, but neater) a loop from the rear rack horns over the tiller and back down.

I can't take any glory for this one Jimbo, its a Standard fit on the D-One, Charlie has the eye, but has probably used the elastic on a lighting board. His normal method on workingout what does what is to take something off until he relises it was vitaly important...Numpty

The boat i used at the nationals had it but i didn't use it and it was much needed to help centre the tiller on drops.  Once i get used to the boat i probably wont need it, but i am very much in the newbie camp at the moment.

Does the elastic actually work?

If your boat is suffering from vast lee or weather helm, can the elastic compensate for this? And also, does it not affect the "feel" on the rudder?

If its suffering from Vast lee or weather helm then there is generally a reason and the elastic does nothing for this.  It has no effect on the feel of the rudder what so ever in my opinion.  But it does help keep the rudder central ad stops you using too much rudder through the tacks and gybes.

It'll only come into play when you're dead running anyway which you should be during hoists and drops..

Dead run on hoists and drops... Ooh no thanks, not on a shifty lake, best keep a slight angle on that breeze IMO.

dead running on hoists and drops is definitely not fast.  Need a slight angle to keep the boat stable and allow you to stay sitting on the side and depending on the boat stay planing.  Perhaps this isnt a problem when you sail a vortex that has sailed up the backside of a giant topper before having a b14 parked on top, might be stable and slow enough to be able to get away with dead down wind hoists and drops.
