Maybe so, but they are not the key party. The Australian Federation and ISAF themselves are the ones that count most here.

There seem to be a number of banned conpetitors at any time, but unless the incident makes the english speaking sailing press I've never managed to find out what the cicumstances leading to a ban were. Thus its difficult to evaluate what ISAF might do. The only vaguely similar one I know of, an incident involving an American which was arguably even worse then this one, resulted in a two year ban.
 
I believe you are talking about Brodie Cobb, think the main difference here is that Brodie actually assaulted the guy whereas BA just had strong words

Half the time, i really don't think folk get exactly how wound up you get if you're competing at that level. You're that wired, it takes very little 'extra' to make you snap. I'm sure it's totally out of character, what you have to do at times sailing at that standard at that level by it's very nature is out of character for most folk. You don't even recognise yourself some of the things you have to do or are forced to push yourself to achieve, in terms of endurance, pain and aggression which is all that drives you to be that micro amount better than the next guy.
Right now he knows he's wrong, probably really sorry, but f**k me the red mist must have been intense, so I fully understand and it reminds me of that old quote from..Theodore Roosevelt, It's certainly not the critic who counts.

I'll just remind everyone..

The other difference and perhaps the reason that Brodie Cobb received a two year suspension was that the competitor he assaulted was a junior, and Cobb didn't stick around for the protest hearing.

The photo sequence- the incident must have been mere seconds if he was so easily able to swim to his boat.

Yes - any sailor looking at that sequence can see there is no time for anything really serious to have happened - but board another boat and you're always in trouble.

But I've been there with boats in the way when team racing, at the same worlds as Mark mentioned, and my wife saw it at a Europeans.

And the need to milk the media must never override the quality and fairness of the event.  Perhaps with this happening to someone of Ben's profile that may now be recognised.

Because, even though I am about +10000 on Graeme's post, there was nothing that made Ben's response to the incident among the "uncontrollables", the fact is that there should never have been any reason for him to have been put in that position/made to feel like that.

Looking at the sequence it looks like he sailed alongside the RIB and jumped in.
 
Beeing part of the Finn Race Team at Sail4Gold and the Test event I have seen similiar instances involving press boats and Ben. He is the one they want to photograph and they all get as close as they can - despite being strict guidlines as to wheren they can and can't go. 
 
At  the end of the day it sounds like a 'handbags at dawn' situation that has been blown out of proportion but the incident has put sailing into the media spotlight - something that the racing never does!
