All good points Jim, though SWMBO would no doubt disagree about my "thinking time".  Maybe it's just the amount that's the issue...

As for the kite...  so how would you go about getting one made "right", without it costing a fortune (development, testing, low volume/one-off build)? Confused

speak with Dynamic Sails about a one-off... they'll take measurements from the rig, pole etc and give you a decent recommendation based on your sailing criteria.

If you want to use it on a racecourse other than w/l go for more of a screecher style (sh*ts n giggles, not necessarily faster- that's not the aim) If you want full-on downwind action for windward/leeward measure the mast; measure the prod; take hand, insert down trousers and cup your balls, these are your only limitations...

I am not sure getting  kite built will cost you anymore then buying a vareo one 'Off the shelf'  If you speak to any decent sail maker with you proposed luff and foot length i am sure they could make you a bespoke kite to fit.  Its worth bearing in mind your shute/sock deign as this will determin where you want you patches.

As for off the shelf, i would think a Vareo kite is probably a good shout.  I would ask one of the Farr owners to give you there hoist hight and mast to pole lengths to make sure its somewhere near.

FWIW i think you have made a great choice of boat to build, please make a blog so we can follow progress.

I'd just ask my normal sailmaker... Anyone who does work for the open rules classes is used to everyone's kites being different from everyone else's. I imagine they take the numbers and the other input and tweak their basic numbers to suit. You have to do your own development and so on, basically order up another kite if you decide you need flatter or fuller or longer luff or something but I've never noticed any great difference in price...

I'm sure there are any number of sailmakers who can do stuff like that. Personally I use Caws on the Isle of Wight who've done me some very nice "here are some numbers" rags over the years, but there are loads of others: Dick Batt would be one that springs to mind of the bigger names.

* Lightbulb appears above head *

If the Vareos have just opted to change their kite to a new flatter shape for "round the cans", does that mean that there'll be a few (cheap) older fatter kites around on the 2nd hand market?

Additionally, if the "UK Fleet" decides to go with kites, should we decide on what size?

So...... a definitive list.....

Who here;
A) Owns a Farr 3.7?
         =1..... Jack Sparrow
B) Is definately going to build one?
         = Bootscooter (99% certain)
C) May well build one?
D) Fancies building one but probably wont?
E) No chance
F) Would be interested in buying a finished hull, to finish themselves?

I'm somewhere between D and E, so won't be building one, but will cheer on to the rafters anybody who does!

Yup, that's me.

Safer for me to revamp an old knackered hull....if only there was one within 500 miles of me!
