asymmetrics.... n'ah forget it unless you want this for class racing and then there's a problem... no class in the UK, bag loads of enthusiasm is simply not enough to push through the inertia of the rest of the competition. Even if 10 of you get it sorted, the reality of modern life is you'll not get an open circuit with enough bodies to bother with.... it'll fail.

Look at the RS100... 100's of boats sold, lucky if 20 show up for an open.   It's an asymmetric and like many asymmetric dinghies it sucks around the cans, therefore you'd have thought more owners would want, sorry need, to get to class events to get the most out of the boat. 10% attendance from fleet... work the maths for a homebuild class without the commercial push someone like RS gives a new class...

Another new asymmetric boat- the D1, had 11 entries for their first nationals of which four weren't even owners. It doesn't matter how good it is, it also doesn't matter whther you think it's ugly or not, the simple fact is you have a chicken and egg situation where the boat NEEDS a windward/leeward course to perform to its handicap, and you simply don't get this very often club racing in the UK.

This is going to come across as negative, which I wish it didn't as I love asymmetric dinghies. But being realistic for a moment, whilst sailing clubs have a reluctance to lay on decent windward/leeward racing (or even box or old school olympic courses) any new asymmetric is going to really struggle to get a foot hold in the club market. Without the big name backing to get a circuit established, like RS with the 100, there's just little other option other than club racing open to a 'new entrant', where it will inevitably suck if you bang a kite on it for racing.

On the other hand the more specialist boats tend to get much higher percentage turnouts at opens...

It sometimes seems to me that the turnout at opens is more nearly proportional to the square root of the number of boats built rather than actual number... A class that builds 4 or 5 boats a year might get 10-15 boats at opens, a class that builds 40 or 50 might get 20-30 and so on...


Funny thing about windward leewards, 3 or 4 years ago we used to have our afternoon races split between w/ls for asymettric boats and quadrilaterals for the rest, but a majority of the asym sailors got bored with w/ls and wanted to do the quadrilaterals...

The difference between what's being talked about here and RS100s, D1s et al is that nobody here is trying to sell them. 
Nobody needs a circuit or even a nationals - they just quite like the boat and fancy building one! 
On the subject of attendances - many of the new all singing, all dancing wizz-bang plastics are bought buy the "need to have the latest, money no object" sailors that have previously left Enterprises, Lasers, Laser4000s, Laser 5000s, ISOs etc to rot in dighy parks up and down the country over the past 20 years.  These will never pitch up at a Nationals.
Everyone that's expressed an interest her IS a regular sailor, and would to out for Sh*ts and giggles against similar boats.  Highest fleet turn outs (% wise) that I've seen were in the Shearwaters - not may boats to begin with, but about 99% of known active boats made the Nationals every year!
 
Why do I fancy one? Looks nice, I've wanted to build a boat (the VW is now finished and sold), my kids'll have fun in it and I reckon it'd be a good trainer for assymetric/trapezing/helming for them. Cool
Oh, and I couldn't afford to buy an off-the-shelf new boat.

And which kiteless singlehanders have been launched more successfully lately?

Obviously the class has to decide, you can't be all things to all people.
Not sure a masthead kit is such a good idea, you need a lot more rigging to support the mast, or a very strong mast which might not be much fun upwind. All about understanding your target market and wind conditions.

OK I am one of those RS100 owners who has not done an open yet. The reason? Well it is a combination of time and cost. Fuel prices I think are putting a lot of people off travelling.
 
So this boat if it gets built will probably be for club sailing. Isabelle wants to move on from her Topper and does not want a Laser or a pipe smokers hiker. She enjoyed her Contender but realised its limitations.
 
We have a friend who is a very good carpenter and sailor who may just be able to build from the laser cut panels. We would then finish and rig the boat.
 
If a class comes out of this then it is a bonus. If it doesn't we can do what we want with the boat. I for one for ease of handling would not go for a fully battened rig with mast head assy. I see this as a helming / trapeze trainer or easier to grasp than a Musto type boat.
 
And yes it should throw you in the water sometimes.

I'd fancy fully battened, but I reckon masthead would be too much, especially in a blow.

As for kite sizes it would be advisable to talk to them that have done it already in NZ / AUS. I wouldn't want to go to big, and think it should be a factional kite if a UK class were to agree to sail with them. Basically what you can see in the video Bootscooter posted.

From Chris Skinner at Fyfe sails NZ:

Hi Daryl.

A 3.7 main from technora is $1500 Nz including battens.
I would recommend to piggy back the freight with the mast and boom. Could use the boom to stiffen and protect the sail.

A main from skiff cloth is $1350Nz.

A lot of the sails made in the last 3 years have been from skiff cloth as it’s a little softer and tends to let the shape move around a little more. They seem to last for ever as long as you don’t jump in them when the boat capsizes.

3.7’s are very cool boats. I have owned a couple over the years and have had some great rides. They are very light compared to the rs boats.
We have even made some with gennakers that can be good fun . Gennakers are approx $500 but not class legal.

I'll second that... 

Been doing a bit on research myself - http://www.robbins.co.uk/pdf/Marine_Pricelist.pdf massive range of ply which is much cheaper than I thought I'd read.  Def think you could get a hull for under £600.
