Didn't the 470 used to be non gender-specific? I seem to recall Cathy Foster contending, along with a male crew.

The 470 did indeed use to be an open class, and I think Cathy was about the only woman who did compete at a race winning level...
Whilst you would think that if you picked the right boat then mixed crews would be favoured, in practice it doesn't seem to work like that... One thing I would say is that I seem to see a lot more all female crewed two handers about than I did fifteen or twenty years ago, and it can only be a good thing... Some years ago I tried to do a study of what makes asymmetric boats popular in terms of championship numbers, and one factor stood out above all others: the more women in the class the more popular the class was... In fact I couldn't see any other correlations at all! Edited by JimC - 28 Oct 11 at 3:15pm |

Ovington not the only one hedging bets...
MacKay Boats are developing a cut down rig 49er as a candidate... Edited by JimC - 28 Oct 11 at 2:21pm |

Is that two cut-down versions of the 49er then, or is the one skiffman was talking about the same thing? And is the 29erxx now effectively dead? |

I doubt the 29erXX is dead: I think Bethwaite is still pushing it like crazy, but it does look as if some of his partners are less than convinced it will win and want an alternative handy...
I'd love to know what actually happened in the last trials and what happened to evaluations of the boats. All I can recall seeing is handouts from the various competing boats, each saying that their boat definitely won. I'm told [updated from orig post] the FX rig skiffman is talking about is the development MacKay rig and not the cut down 49er rig that's been around for a few years. Rumour has it that a MacKay rig was recently shipped over to the UK for a trial against the Aura. Edited by JimC - 28 Oct 11 at 3:13pm |

QUOTE; "The boat goes a long way towards fulfilling one of the ISAF Olympic Commission
Reports Recommendation to have as much shared equipment as possible between the
genders." Has an obvious advantage there over most other candidates. On that basis alone it could come down to whoever can design the best rig to bolt onto a 49er platform. Every other player ought to play another card and turn up with their xyz rig adapted to fit a 49er hull as well as.

Seeing there is competion for the boat - the best is open and fair trials and best boat wins.
Unfortunately I bet there will be a pile of backroom trading by the various national organisations eg RYA IMHO no national organisation should declare a favoured boat and should insit on allowing the trials to decide the outcome May the best boat win |

Well, lets think of some trials winners... 49er Tornado Contender (yes, I know it didn't get in the games in the end, but won the trials), that's the only ones I can recall) I'm not sure what other trials |
