Actually, going back to the first picture in the OP - I know it's the head of the spinny sticking out of the chute, but it really does look like a hooded figure crouched in some sort of bow station; in which case, the bowsprit could actually be a cannon...Hmm - perhaps there is merit in this new design after all...

Just to make a point. At the RS 800 inlands. 41 boats. 19 girls crewing. 4 helming of which 3 were all girl teams. In no way would I dismiss female helms but would it not be more representative to have mixed skiffs?

(b14 is an oddity- though otherwise we sail rather like most twin trap boats, the jib needs much more attention and has pretty high sheeting loads, so the helm takes the main unless you're French)

I dont see the problem with an all female crew, I'd prefer that to mixed crews. None of the athletic sports at the Olympics have mixed teams so why should sailing? Just have 5 mens classes and 5 womens classes that are parrelled. I reckon it would be more fun to watch too from a blokes point of view, sailing is a sausage fest at the best of times, get more women involved! As for this new one, I think its looks fantastic, now could they make one thats for fatties please. All these sub 150kg crew weight boats are great but miss a huge market. A SMOD 2 man skiff with crew weight of 180-220kg please.....

Are you not counting Badminton and Tennis then? Personally, I think sailing lends itself very well to being a mixed team sport. Glad to see it in for one class in 2016, I'm really suprised the 470 didn't become mixed as well, could then have indulged with some other class/event.

Most sailing clubs are very male-heavy, and that is not good for the social side. I'd guess that most male sailors would prefer a few more females about the place. For that reason, I'd like to see mixed crews promoted - this might then get reflected at club level. As someone suggested above, all-girl teams are always likely to have minority appeal no matter how hard you push them, so they will leave many women out in the cold.
Whether that means I'd like to see the boat specified as mixed is another matter. I think it would be healthier to achieve the result naturally by choosing classes which favour lightweight, less physically strong crew members (helm and crew), then have no restrictions as to sex. The Lark has little to recommend it other than its suitability for female crews and/or helms, yet it's thriving, not least socially - surely a message there?

Now just think a minute... ISAF has been told "make sailing more TV friendly" and open to all nations
So they have recentlytotally ignored this by keeping with out of date boats and binning Multihulls The trend hopefully will be reveresed - Multihulls are back in and hopefully a UK designed and built modern sexy looking dinghy will get he womens slot - when they get the Aura tweaked and dialed in. i bet it will make the 49er look a bit passé But then ISAF seem to be world leaders sticking their heads in the sand, ignoring what their sport is actully doing and designing camels by committe..... Now if there were gold medals availble in these disciplines :-) |

Sailing at the Olympics is also a prime sport for either/or male/female entries. I think that only the equestrian events currently has no gender specific entry, and I fail to see why sailing does. Few boats (if any?) require brute strength that would put men at a possible atheltic advantage. Weight and technical ability are often far more important for each class. This would have been interesting at the last Olympics where all the sailors were trying to lose weight in the build up as they were anticipating light winds - non-gender specific entry might have made the selctions very different
