How many of the curent Olympic classes were designed in the 50s?
Star - 1910
Finn - 1949
470 - 1963
Laser - 1969
Laser Radial - 1969/1980s?
49er - 1995
Elliot 6m - 2000/2008
RSX - 2004

perhaps I lack your precision Jim, but thanks for the backup, think you've made my point quite nicely there...

I'll certainly be interested to see it- should be at Grafham the weekend it is there (ovi inlands) for club racing (as the b14s were rather pushed out of that event with our change of builder- but we had a good fun weekend gatecrashing the cherub inlands)

It will be good to see it on the lawn!
Needs to sail more...

from what i have heard the boat was designed from day one to fit the ISAF Olympic bid spec as a womens skiff, something the 49, 29 and RS have not been as they have been adapted

from seeing it being tested - it worked stright from the box...that is soemthing for any new design. Last time out it was working even better as they had undertaken some tweaks to the rig from when they had been down south. i bet now the 29, female 49 and MPS woudl struggle to keep up
Ovi's are not daft and i bet they have solved the problem  (if there was any at all) of high volume production for a dreadnought bow

IMHO the book looks great, seem to perform well and i'm sure many of us bloke of normal size (ie those of us who are not Ben Ainslie dimensions) would enjoy sailing it

If this is his first design i'm sure peter Hobson will be a designer to watch

Looks a good three feet too long to be that. Personally I'd need to see sme rather more useful pictures of this boat to be prepared to comment on it though.

Bearing in mind the apparent sales figures so far of the 29erXX the motivation for Ovington to have an alternate candidate for the Womens two hander seems obvious. MacKay knows his way round a performance boat too.

Personally - I don't get why Ovington Boats would want to launch a competing boat into the market which they spend alot of time and money on i.e. the 29er and essentially the XX. I don't get it and to be fair don't like the look of the Aura, it looks more like the future of the Cherub then a production boat for the Olympics! Any ideas on £££ as the Ovi website shows nothing?

HOWEVER...

It has a dreadnought bow and Cool Board rules automatically make it cool (well that bit anyway)

Remember an a cat hull is 17" long and prob about 1" wide.
A razorblade would look blunt next to that.
Aura is prob about 16" long and say 4 or 5" wide.
As long at the angle of entry of the waterplane is where you want it (I'm sure it is on the aura) then you're only winning with the dreadnought.
The other thing that will trick the eye is the lower freeboard - this will make the bow look "dumpier" than it really actually is.
