I don't think this implies that any unfair behaviour took place - to me this just seems to conmfirm that what went on was within the rules and was OK
I copies from the MR forum because it does have some good info on it (although sometimes this gets 'lost') Edited by ob1 - 12 Sep 11 at 10:33am |

It just does seem unfair to those of us not brought up with the idiosyncrasies of sailing. I remember the first time it occurred it was at the 1980 Windsurfer Class Nationals and it wasn't even to win, it was a third place guy covering his position, he basically didn't even line up, came from above and sailed his nearest competitor down the fleet on the gun, it was a long event so carried double discard, he was able to chuck out the OCS he obtained from this race and forced the unfortunate to carry a second even larger discard to add to his total. This chap then went on to coach our Olympic youngsters, I'll not mention names, but it seemed horrendously unsportsmanlike to me at the time, it still does.
If it were an athletics meeting it would be like someone getting out of the blocks early changing lanes and standing in front of another runner. A race is a race, to see who is fastest, not a competition to see who can heed anothers performance. I accept in team racing it can be part and parcel of the game, but no, to me, it's a cheap and chiselling trick, in all my years I never engaged in it and thought very ill of anyone who did, 'typical dinghy waller' is what I'd have thought back then and you know what? I still do. It is not in the spirit of fair sport and competition, the guy comes across as a jerk. Edited due to Monday morning harshness Edited by G.R.F. - 12 Sep 11 at 11:01am |

I'd have thought you'd have had enough life experience not to judge people you haven't met and don't know.

Graeme, it happens in motor racing. Where is the problem? The real problem here was the OCS/Redress.
As for Andy being a jerk, you are wrong there pal. He is a great guy.

I bet the fella he sailed down the pan won't agree with you..
but agree it's not my place to judge someone I haven't met, but I'm my case it did prove an accurate character assessment as time went on to prove, good blokes don't do that Edited by G.R.F. - 12 Sep 11 at 11:03am |

To quote ob1 "... if this
behaviour is not aimed at staying ahead of this competitor in a race or a
series..." but the aim was PRECISELY that - to ensure the SERIES result. Therefore within the rules. I believe the PC got it wrong awarding average points instead of reinstating the finishing position, and would love to hear the reasoning behind that decision.

In the report here http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=159375 Geoff Carveth says “I certainly enjoyed sailing the Merlin Rocket for the first time at a championships, especially the long traditional style of racing, the winner did what he had to do to win, but it’s not necessarily the way I would’ve done it.” |
