Well put.

If  windsurfing is now so great - brilliant, stick withit and stop moaoning about a sport we all; enjoy and persist with.

Personaly lots pof people I know can effectively 'hide' in that sport and talk the talk.

When it comes to sailing thers no real hiding place -  its clear who is good and who isnt

PS. Having read bcak thriugh these posts I cant believe that yet again we are all off topic due to the usual protagaonisyts.

i.e GRF typically berating sailors and boats that he knows nothing about and Rogue telling us all about his amazing new sport/craft and how rubbish dinghy racing is (although this is a sailing forum)!)

Back on topic - please !

Hi getafix, yep it does sound like a GRF apologist, I wish it was any other sport other than windsurfing, the comparison would then hold more weight on this particular forum. However this is not my intention, my only point was to further illustrate some of the quirkiness in dinghy sailing, that in my opinion holds it back - jimC sums it up well that there really isn't one dinghy scene. There is a paradox- we all like to sail different boats and I think this is great, without event supplied equipment the one-design concept is inherently flawed, yet the one leveller (PY) we have is ridiculed by many sailors and most clubs do not give it the respect to even return their data to improve it.

Btw- no I'm not frustrated about my performance in any given class (well maybe the MPS, wish I was better in that) but I'm quite level headed about it all- there's a time and a place to be concerned about personal competitiveness, for me that's not at weekends when I'm relaxing. But I do find some of the attitudes of dinghy sailors rather odd- only the other day I heard someone say they'd rather not go sailing than have to share their fleet start line with another fleet- odd when her class in question could only muster an average 3 on the start line in the series. A year ago it would have peeved me off, now I just think 'f**k it, no wonder the sport which I have loved for 30 years is in decline'

Rupert is right- diversity is a great thing, that's why I love the V-Twin concept, but it strikes me there is a fundamental dichotomy between celebrating this diversity and making it the best we can and the 'establishment' of a fixed class structure which has dubious merits for all involved.

If you want back on topic, post something on topic... I haven't said how rubbish dinghy sailing is, I merely highlighted the pathticness of the moral objection towards a bloke winning a nationals within the rules, yet less than a year ago, there was moral outcry over the sailjuice series won by a guy who did 'break the rules, but not the spirit of them'.

The rest is just dialogue- who made you the steering committee? Btw- if you want to play moderator learn to spell protagonist... you'll have more credibility.

I have no desire to play moderator - just observing that, regardless of the topic, the same drivel (IMO)  is regularly spouted by the same people.

I do hate all this narrow-minded, patronising "get back on topic" rubbish.  Its a forum where people will have different views, will hopefully bring diffferent perspectives (yes even from outside of sailing), and will not all agree with you

Thanks ob1, and given the OP set this up as a discussion and not a 'multiple choice' poll, I fail to see where it's really off topic.

I make a point about an allied sport and how it seemingly, had a good vibe at an event I witnessed. JimC then points out that in fact, there really is not a 'dinghy scene' by comparison (good POV, I hadn't thought of it like that before) and this ultimately leads to the question... 'how can there be a top dog'!
