I've heard the name in race reports (and had guessed he was "Taxi"), but don't sail the classes he does, so have never met him. Am I right in thinking he works for one of the sail or kit manufacturers? Could explain the amount of "holiday time", but not the talent, needed to win in so many different classes.
Not sure how many Nationals Uffa won - he didn't race that often, really, except to test or sell boats. The time of Avenger in 1928 appears to be unusual, and back then it was almost the only dinghy class sailed nationally.

Uffa tended to describe himself as a cruising man rather than a racing man, although with his tongue in his cheek I suspect. I think he won a few Canoe events as well as the 14: certainly he was half of the team that won the New York Canoe Club trophy, which is supposed to be the second oldest active international trophy after the Americas Cup. In those days not all events were open to industry pros anyway.

Everyone buys a boat which they like and suits their weight and style. They then practice and club race in that boat. If they feel good enough and do well at club level they have a pop at the Class Nationals. Perhaps there are 5 people attending the nationals who are in with a chance of winning or doing well. Therefore the Nationals winner probably is the top sailor in that class. Now there could be some chap pootling around on a remote puddle who is better than the Champion but he cannot be included for obvious reasons, he did not enter and no one knows he is there. Richard Adams in "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" said that the finest poet who ever lived resided in Hendon and never wrote a poem. (paraphrase).
It is not a bad system, unless someone can find a better one and sailors who can adapt to different classes and win must be good at it. |

I don't know whether the PC had any other option at the time, other than to offer option (a) since looking at the results there had only been 2 previous races (both won by the affected boat) in an eventual series of 6. It does seem extremely unfair that a boat effectively racing for 2 x results can be subject to such interference from another competitor, but then that is the way the rules are. |

Another variation on the Poet is "The greatest racing driver of all time lives in a small village in northern Russia - unfortunately he does not know what a car looks like and no-one knows who he is"

Yeah agreed... Maybe average points should exclude the last race so this sort of situation can't occur again. Whilst Mr Davis' action was certainly within the letter of the law I think its very hard to make a case for it being a desirable outcome. Effectively Mr Carveth lost because of a Race Committee error. Edited by JimC - 05 Sep 11 at 1:01pm |

Wasn't he one of the two lads earlier this year that got flung out for discrepancies with the sails they were using on a Merlin? And there, the fact he was using a Merlin is reason enough not to give a rats arse as to who he may or may not be, why would a young bloke in the full flush of youf drive a sad old tub like a Merlin and for what? Pot hunting? Commercial Gain? Handicap Banditry? Real respect due there then - not. If it isn't the same bloke then I fully retract everything said and humbly apologise to the young sir, if it is then bollox you've just wasted a few more hundred keystrokes of my pathetically short life expectation you're back below the radar with all the other commercial who-ers..

I think you'll find he wasn't one of them, and in any case the guys in question weren't flung out, they elected to retire. |

How does handicap banditry come into a single class Nationals? As for pot hunting, there are few classes harder to win than the Merlins.
As for the match racing thing - if average points excluded the last race, wouldn't it just happen in the race before?
And Uffa was very good in Canoes - I get the feeling he was the kind of sailor who needed more of a challenge than just normal racing week in week out, and whether it was mad trips across the channel in open boats or sailing a 22sqm to Sweden, going to America to race Canoes or proving his design was better than anything that had gone before, he was up for it.
