The magnum mini transat does not race under any rating rule - it races in a box rule and theres a big difference in how that influences hull shape.

Designing for a rating rule involves creating the largest delta possible between actual performance and rated performance. The actual speed or seaworthyness of the boat is irrelevent, so long as you are faster than your rating says you are. (Unless of course you are designing for a specific rating band - say for the ComCup)

Box rules such as the Classe Mini give a maximum length, breadth, draft, and a mast height (along with some other restrictions on construction, safety and sail wardrobe) and it is up to the designer to come up with the fastest boat possible within those limits.

Although not built to any box rules this thing is built to rules I set myself, i.e a monohull not a cat, fast yet helmed by a midget (but could be kids or wimmen) with average boat handling skills. Maximum length 490, max width 2.00m without racks so it'll fit in the boat park. Max weight 50 kgs all up.

As to what it looks like, I think you may be surprised once it's on the water and the underside hidden, I know for a fact the boys down in Romsey are genuinely excited as it has come together, (the mast is going up as this is written). I don't think they're just saying that, it is something very different and it's looking more and more likely to actually deliver every day. That hull looks a very good 'sea' boat, I'd happily take it across the Channel but equally I think it's going to work in flat water, maybe I see things differently to most, but I'm not even considering it aint going to work, I'm just wondering what horrendous *PY I'm going to end up with and am hoping it'll still be this side of 900.

*Not sure my plan of calling it a Wayfarer is going to wash

I'm curious as to the construction method as I just can't seem to figure it out from the photos on your site. I lost it when the mould was pulled away, followed by sanding and now laminating....

Seriously if your thinking PY even remotely near 900 then you must be fitting a pedalo style prop system in the void in the aft hull section.... I really dont see how that thing is going to sail quickly with all the wash swilling about between the aft hull sections disturbing flow?

I am now thinking its looking like a cross between a fat fireball and a Funboat/Vortex.
However I cannot wait to be proved wrong when its winning all the handicap events later this year.....

It's not about winning by handicap, it's about being first over the line, boat in the boat park, cover on before the next boat crosses the line.... Wink

Handicap means if there's a laser just sailing anywhere remotely near the course it'll win on handicap and be full to the gunwale with mackerel

Why don't you just hang around in the boat park then? You will always be first to have the cover on.
Needs to sail more...

I am with Graeme, nothing better then being so far ahead you have the boat out the water with your cover on!  Even if you get battered on handicap its still a moral victory!

I like to be standing on the balcony overlooking the slip, pint in hand as the hotshot (he's well up the fleet in the laser masters) who will probably beat me on handicap comes up the slope with his boat full of mackerel, I smirk and I'm looking down on him (unusual perspective for me) when I ask what kept him or did he not actually enter that race... (He'll generally win at our club and no doubt will be forced to break out the MPS when the V-Twin hits the water, but that's the craik, the post race banter, and that's all it's about, him, the Chuckle Bros in the five oh, the Constantly Over the line Lawyer, Dumb & Dumberer, He who cannot be spoken of or he'll protest you also in a Contender, She who crews the 470 and loves a good hiding, my mate in a Phantom that I've sworn to eat if he ever beats me again and sundry others in Lasers of all guises 2,3+4k, Visions, Hobie 405's, RS 200's and 500) They are all going to have to get used to a new stern.. Wink
