Small cruisers are as cheap as chips if you accept to look after an oldish boat, and don't go for prestige (aka expensive) boats like the Crabber . For 2/3k you can start sailing straight away.

Sorry I haven't replied in a while. I've been very very busy recently. Anyway, thanks for all the info. I have now started to look at small yachts, about 20ft. sized, as they would take 6 people easier, but they all seem to be quite expensive. I also noticed some traditional dinghies / yachts at the Southampton boat show. In particular they were Cornish Crabbers (thanks to asterix for mentioning these before) and Kittiwakes. They seem very nice, but are way out of my price range (obviously). The Morwenna was nice as well (a charter vessel). Still, maybe I'll finally win the jackpot on the premium bonds soon.

Personally, I'd expect anything under 40ft to be less than great with 6 people on it. |

From personal experience, compared to the others mentioned the Sport 16 is a horrible boat, not nice to sail.

To add somthing else to the mix what about a sport 16? Their big can take 6, fairly stable and probabally good for cruising from the times i've sailed one. Their not v.fast, more of a training boat tbh. I've forgotten how heavy they are, but for it's size i don't think it was bad! Their not as common as some of the others mentioned and they are not as expensive as the lasers (obv!) and more durable than the wooden ones.

Thanks for posting that. Completely missed it as part of my deliberations to get a small cruising boat for the family. |

Wayfarer is rated safe for four people- doubt the Venture will be rated for any more.

Not sure if you need something immediately or what your budget is but the RS Venture seems to be purpose built for your requirements and I believe will be launched in the Autumn at the Southampton show. I've seen the Cad drawings and it looks very spacious...
