Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good sailing club in or near Worcestershire? I've only sailed a little - mostly when I was at school 20yrs ago. Sailed a couple of times on holiday this year and really enjoyed it - thought I would take it a little further! I don't have my own dinghy, so would like a club that has club boats that I could use. Any suggestions? |

Hi Captain Pugwash and welcome,
There is a useful search facility on this website for finding sailing clubs.
If you click on the 'Clubs' & classes tab at the top of the page. A quick look locally showed up;
Arden SC www.ardensc.org.uk
Severn SC www.severnsailing.org.uk
Evesham SC www.eveshamsailing.co.uk
If you are looking for personal recommendations, then a local should be along shortly to pass on their knowledge and views of their club, or possibly others that have visited these clubs, who may have a more impartial view. There are of course other clubs slightly further afield from Worcester, just widen your search area.
In the meantime you could peruse their websites, or pay them a visit over the weekend...I'm sure they would all extend a warm greeting to you. They may well have 'club' boats for the use of competent members and also RYA training courses available. You may find that you will need to satisfy the club (by qualification or by demonstration) that you are competent to borrow a boat.
Another possibility is getting into crewing for someone, you may be able to be 'signed in' as a guest for a few occasions which can help you test the water before commiting to membership.

Severn is a good club, but also check out Tewkesbury. Slightly wider stretch of the river thats not so bendy and offers a more constant wind (only just) friendly club, cheap bar and galley. Camping on site available at weekends, near to local town, free kids training. Kids club boats available, but club is in process of buying adult boats i think. Having said that Tewkesbury or Severn would be an excellent choice to break back into sailing.

Another one well worth a look would be Chemlarsh. It's on a fairly large lake, not a river, and has active fleet racing in a number of classes.
Even if cruising is your scene fleets and racing are an important consideration because you will be able to get good advice about your boat from a number of sources, provided of course you do the sensible thing and buy a boat common at the club. The chances are you will end up racing sooner or later.
Club boats. My advice is use them in the short term but don't come to rely on them.

Thank you all for your advice.
I've had a look at all the suggestions on the Internet and plan to visit a couple in person next week. I'm sure I'll be back on the forum soon asking 'how to' questions. As a beginner there are so many questions. Thanks again.
