Thanks Fab,
I did try the 10.2 it was a bloody nightmere in sudden gusts of over 20 knots,so I've gone back to the 8.4 until I get used to her.When you say set it up for the top end I assume everything yanked on to flaten the sail,what mast foot setting do you sail with in strong winds,I've been advised between 4 and 5.
We also have a problem with weed,which is not good when the center plate needs to be down all the time,I've had a few control issue,s when the weed has pushed it up.!!!!

Weed: nightmare. When you get one of those gusts downwind and the boats stops dead for weed, the rig loads up like crazy and something has to give - usually uprightness! Happily, our weed is getting a major short, back and sides next week.

Yes, you can pull all hell out of the controls - gnav arms down perhaps 2/3 of the travel plus, sneaky-pig hard as it will go. There are several ways to pre-tension them so you have enough travel. Mark H's method is neat - he has quite big loops on both gnav tails and on the cunno. Light wind and it loops over, windy and it wraps around the gorilla bolt a second time. You can also move the splices too. Inland I just pull on the outhaul pretty hard and forget it. With all this, you can get the top of the rig blading almost like a sailboard sail.

Shrouds don't do much upwind, so not convinced yet about moving the pins, but you could rake back quite a way from marks 4-5. I've learned that in the phantoms when overpowered, they just rake the rig back more and more. bit easier for them tho - they just let the string off a bit. Try going back to marks 2-3 perhaps as a starter.

Main thing tho is just to be aggressive and make sure the boat knows who the boss is.

Persevere - its worth it

So ease the sheet, bear off slightly just before the gust; use the gust to jump up a gear in boat speed 5.5 ave to 7-8 knots possible. Luff in the lulls and make ground back to windward. You realise this boat's been maximised for open water right?

Hike harder, loosen the toestraps and hike harder. When offwind, hike even harder to get through the bearaway. Once the kite's up, head up, sheet in to stop the main blanketing the kite and you guessed it... now it's time to really start hiking.

Let the boat know who's boss! just like the wife then!!!!!
Guru says its going to blow a bit tomorrow so hopefully should be a good session.We should be getting a weed trim soon,£3.5k,bargin,one less thing to trip over.I'm in comunication with Nick Lattey he's the training rep for the RS100 apprently so I'll let you know what he comes up with regard training if your interested.Thanks for the advice.

If anyone fancies some practice on the sea at Lancing on the south coast let me know and I could probably arrange some racing. Also a possibility for a training venue, we may need to man a rib ourselves with one coach and one driver.
 
We now have 3 100s at Lancing so are slowly building a fleet. The boats are admired by quite a few members.

Contender,

Fishers Green SC,a pond North of London,Enfield area,I know it sounds like a dodgy place to sail,its not really,its what we like to refer to as challenging!We have two RS100's both pilots in need of some tuition to speed the process along.
I'd be up {R Send up probably} for a bit of sea training/racing later in the year.

you're always welcome up at Rutland if you want a bigger inland venue - there are two of us here in 100s also learning and would be keen for some more training

Hi Guys,

Dont forget we have a training day just before the Nationals - will be great opportunity to pick up lots of useful tips and to share experiences at every level.

Paul - the key to your issue I would say is anticipation. It is really important to keep the boat flat and not let her heel over and screw into wind. Anticipate the gusts and be ready to dump a LOT of mainsheet if necessary. In gnarly gusty conditions I try to sail with what feels like a bit of windward heel, just to make sure everything stays nice and calm and im not having to fight the boat to keep it flat.

Im not saying its right for everyone but I sheet from the boom (avoiding the ratchet and cleat) and find this gives a very sensitive feel - its very effective in survival conditions. Only time it doesn't work so well is in lighter breeze when you need to be block-to-block with more leech tension and it is too easy to oversheet by pulling the bridle block inboard away from the stops.

Hi chaps,had a great days sailing on Saturday tried a lot of what was suggested,very helpful thank you,even took line honours in one race but was stuffed on handicap.

Chris,I understand the nationals are being held mid week,unfortunatly I can't afford the time.

Asterix,are the inland champs being held at Rutland,is there going to be training prior to that?if not,Nick Lattey the training rep for RS has suggested that he maybe able to organise some training in Oct,but he needs dates,so if anyone is interested maybe he can arrange a couple of days prior to the inland champs.

yes, the inland champs at Rutland on 22 and 23 October do seem to be on the RS100 calendar
 
 
there is also another RS100 event listed at Rutland on 12 November
