Hi guys,

So ive got a 49er. Someone has previously gone mad with progrip on it. The wings are covered completely, and so is the deck sole.

Im slowly stripping it off to find they have sanded the old gelcoat grip off almost completely. Now ive seen you can pay £500+ for it to be redone professionally, but im a student. What stuff do these pros use to redo the decks? Is it a non-slip paint additive? Is it worth my effort over progrip or should i just wax up and man up.

I'm totally ignorant regarding the latest in 49er kit, but why not just stick with the progrip approach?

Personally Im not a massive fan of big sheets of progrip. I dont think the stuff is actually that grippy... i prefer wax over it. There is also the weight issue, as im sure it must absorb a fair bit of water when wet?

You could always do all the prep work yourself, which is where the bulk of the cost will come from as that is where all the labour is.
Once you have done that, just find a local/ or well respected place to respray the grip.
If you do all the prep work to an acceptable standard, then I doubt it would cost £100, or atleast I probably wouldnt charge more than that.

I live in Cambridge but spend more time working down south near Portsmouth. I do realise that it could potentially be quite a bit cheaper to do the prep work myself, but wouldn't know exactly what's involved! I have heard that it is basically a job of sanding back most of the gelcoat (if you want to keep down to weight) and then re-spraying/coating with gelcoat and lying sand/sugar over the top? So I would be doing the sanding prep work to take it back to the fibres. Where abouts do you do the work?

You don't need to take it back to the fibreglass, if you do this then you will always be able to see the laminate through the grip as you only put quite a thin layer on. All you need to do is make sure the surface is smooth, so use something like a 120 grade sandpaper with a block to make sure there are no bumps/ troughs.
The way i would do it would be to mix grip particles into the gel and spray it on, this makes sure you get a nice even finish.

Who are you sailing the 9er with oli? Is it coming down to plymouth next year?  Not gonna bring the 100 to start with because MB is a rip off for pound spaces and i just cant afford it at the moment.

I would say you are right to stay away from progrip, a certain 600 we know of quite well is the best example of why not to grip your decks in this way! LOL

So the plan would be to take it back until it's still got a thin flat layer of gelcoat on, and then spray on the gelcoat! Are there any cheap spray kits out there rather than buying a full spray gun, hose etc? My local gelcoat guy only does brush on. He does a very very good job, but I'm tempted to try it myself.

Yeh, it will be replacing the 600 once/if I get to the nationals. Havent got a set crew but will just see who is up for it. Not fussed! Come out on the 9er! And yes, it was a certain 600 that has completely put me off a fully pro gripped boat, along with the colour scheme of the old stuff.

More than up for a sail in the 9er when we get back to plymouth but only if the decks are rougher than say.... ice! On a more useful note, brushing may also work with the grip compound, speak to your local guy and see what he thinks.  Is it just the wings that need doing or the whole deck?  Plenty of grip where the crew runs in to hoist is essential as I found on jjs boat as i nearly went clean out the other side at starcross this year!

Well the wings definitely need something, but the deck itself is quite grippy except where the previous owner put a few strips of pro grip, so I think I will actually replace those strips and look at how it is then! Now just need to sort out colour matched gelcoat.
