Thanks to you and Paul for the suggestions. The Lakes looks good for me and your article, Alan, looked very encouraging. I might have a peek at Bass during Bass week, when I normally go to sail the FF.
At least it gives me an option for a few more years of fun! Ian |

Have had super fun with the K1 this season competing mainly in the club menagerie fleet with good results, but if anyone is looking for a second hand one please message me as my husband has persuaded me to return to double handing so am regretfully going to let the K1 go to a new home.

Can I first say how frustrating it is to find posts about the K1.... it seems you need at least three letters to search for anything.
Just wondering how K1 sailors were finding helm weight was making a difference. It's a large sail plan and even though the keel will help it's maybe not that much and benefits everyone equally. Is it a boat for heavier sailors or do lighter sailors enable the threshold to plane an advantage..... assuming they can get it depowered enough upwind, ie does mast rake, downhaul etc all do their job?

Results so far suggest that the K1 has a broad competitive weight range as hoped - we've seen race winners from under 10 stone to over 16 stone.
It certainly carries weight well as you might expect being 15ft long, and the top three out of 21 boats at the Nationals held in medium wind were all quite heavy, 15 stone plus, but good sailors too. At the last open at Queen Mary we had very close racing with a range of crew weights in a fair breeze. I'm just over 11 stone and finished second oa with heavier sailors in first and third. It was marginal planing conditions and I think on average I did better on the offwind legs than upwind, but it was hard to judge and fair to say that the wind shifts played a much bigger role than crew weight and we enjoyed close tactical racing without any capsizes. There are all the usual rig adjustments to de-power in a breeze and lightweights may get away with sailing slightly more heeled to windward in a breeze, allowing the keel to do a bit more work, as long as they don't heel too far.

I have a K1 as a result of a no kneeling request from my doctor after a knee operation (menisectomy). I've sailed it at Burghfield lake for 8 years now. My normal boat was a Phantom.
I like the K1, it has many plus points: Boat 45 Kg, keel 60 Kg, so no capsizing, even in very strong winds. High boom, carbon, so no headaches. Totally abusable in very windy gybes, a dream ! Sails close to the wind and gives you plenty of warning as heavy gusts hit. Planes easily in strong wind, jib and main tell-tales show what's going on. This is a delightful boat to sail.

Interesting that you say no kneeling. We have on K1 at our Club and the owner spends much of his time kneeling in lighter airs.
