Ian, I believe there are one or two at South Windermere, haven't heard of any in Scotland yet. I reviewed the boat for Yachting Life mag, and liked it a lot. The test should still be accessible on the mag's website, under tests. Could be a good boat for many Scottish Lochs.

Quick question, does any one no what the class rules are? Are you allowed to race them with more than 1 person on board?

It occurs to me that it would be an easy way for me to get our three year old out on the water... I can sail it on my own with her along for the comparatively safe and stable ride but as her confidence grows she can start pulling some of the string.

I would not expect there to be many (any) quibbles from a racing point of view if you were to do so.
Speak with the OOD / RO and get it rubber stamped
If you were to try to do so at a big event - Nats, the larger handicaps - then yes there is an issue, but otherwise...
When you find a big kettle of crazy it's probably best not to stir it - Pointy Haired Boss

If you want safe and stable probably best to go for a wayfarer. K1 is designed to sail heeled and I doubt your 3 yr old would reach the toe straps! Can be quite flighty in gusts.
I have added 'grip strips' to the glass like side decks.
FYI, 1 up for racing although class rules still under construction.

That's fair enough but not really true. However flighty you feel the K1 is in gusts it would still be better than me at 70kgs effectively sailing a Wayfarer single handed!

But I take your point. I have sailed a K1 before, all be it one of the first Prototypes so I do have some idea of what its like... and for what its worth i think the class could add to its appeal if it doesn't specify a crew number. Most of the time you would be slower with more than one any way but it opens it up for family's more allowing a passenger.

Alan, Thanks. I was a member at North Berwick with my Fifteen but it is almost impossible to launch over a shallow beach. I am currently with Bassenthwaite and torn between using the Lakes or back to N Berwick. The K1 would solve the problem at N Berwick but as ever it is a matter of finding Class soulmates!

Ian, two great locations. Agree launching FF at N Berwick wouldnt be good. Personally with K1 I would opt for Bass/ Lakes for better launching and recovery, also less big waves than at N Berwick. Or go North to say L Tummel, Earn, Venachar etc.

I am pretty sure there is one K1 at Loch Tummel SC.

We had nine out on Windermere for our open a couple of weeks ago, with 2 from the host club South Windermere - the report is on the K1 class page here or the website www.k1sailing.com.  At least one owner is planning to compete at Bassenthwaite for Bass week and as Peter said there is one K1 at Loch Tummel.
Ian F. - several owners have been out sailing with youngsters onboard but the class rules state one person for crew as we want to keep it as a single-handed keelboat for racing.  But I'm sure we could make an exception for 3 year olds!  Otherwise you could always introduce her as crew in a Firefly or Grad at Chistead, my oldest was only 4 when he first 'crewed' for me on Wednesday nights in a Firefly at CSC...
