I launched my K1 about three weeks ago. I sail on the River Blackwater in Essex and launch off a gently graduated stone beach. I am 5'5, 60 kilos, so not your average weighty chap! I have no problems launching on my own and simply float her off, have a long painter, drag her in closer and drop the keel so she doesn't float away whilst i take the trolley up the beach. Getting away from the shore is not an issue except in a direct onshore breeze when I either get a tow out if it's a club day and there is a safety boat around or give up and retire to the bar (fortunately direct northerlys are fairly rare here). Getting back to shore just takes a bit of thought and advance planning but is not the issue I thought it might be. I can easily get the boat back on the trailer on my own and get her to the shore line. Thinking of buying a quad bike to get her up the beach though when my 'trolley dolly' (husband) is not around to help. I missed all the good weather early on and have been battling in some fairly gusty stuff. Very safe and secure and flys downwind, singing while she goes. Last week the phantoms were capsizing and others struggling with their kites in the gusty blows and I just whizzed by and had absolutely no worries of getting a dunking on the gibe. Currently have a few upwind issues in the strong stuff but all round she is an absolute delight. Reason I went for this boat?........got too exhausted, wet and cold righting capsizes. Happily a thing of the past. Edited by debsw - 20 Jun 11 at 2:50pm |

Hi Debs
sounds light you have found a great boat for you. I would suggest that the Phantom fleet at Stone have come up with a massive handicap cheat if they were flying spinnakers downwind and we will have to watch out for this at the Nationals at Lyme later in the year. Good luck with your new boat. Regards Gordon Phantom 1277 scheming on how to fit a spinnaker chute for this weekend at Shoreham. |

Debs.
How refreshing to read your experience of your new K1 and how you launch etc. It's the sort of post that actually encourages people to go sailing. Marvellous |

+1. I hear only good about the K1. I'll have to have a go sometime. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

debsw, you should come round to the bsc this sunday, its the osea challenge cup, and apparently some stone members are coming round including some k6's to join our fleet for the day. http://www.blackwatersailingclub.org.uk/index.php?option=com_jumi&fileid=16&Itemid=59

Must admit I'm itching for a go in one. I think it looks ace....
And it seems to be able to cater for a wide rnage of weights....

Keith, you could race 3 times a week with one, joining the keelboats on a Friday eve and no problems looking for crew.

Yeh good point Renny
As much as I'm bought into the k1 concept I'm sticking with Mr Handleys other wonderful design. Definitely easier to pull back up the slip after racing.... Cheers, Keith. |

@gordon 1277......... new to posting here, missed out the word 'others' before struggling, not sure how to edit! Given how much time Phantom sailors spend getting wet without a kite, not really sure most of them could handle it anyway, just trying to let the uninformed or interested hear some of the practical aspects of this boat.
There is a K1 open meeting with rigging/tuning seesion by Paul Handley at Broxbourne 2 and 3 July if anyone is interested

There comes a time in life when you have to admit that all is not what it was. As a Ffifteen sailor and much the same dimensions as Nick1, I have been looking for something to sail single handed comfortably but avoid the consequent hassle of trying to stay upright and not get too wet. From what you guys have been saying the K1 looks great.
I would say that there will be a market for veterans like me who still think they are 50ish and can compete! I would be interested to know if any have found their way up to the Lakes yet? Ian |
