It certainly looks like a great boat - not much else compare with it.

But why oh why did they not just call it the X1 ?

The test showed it was good for lighter breezes - ideal for most of the British summer on the sea, harbours, bigger lakes etc etc. i.e not just rivers.

I just would'nt  be able to say "I've just bought a Riverboat" without cringing.

Also the price looks prohibitive for many.

You're forgetting the Alto, it too had some river use heritage.

But it is also equally at home on the sea in a force 6.

Good point - although for 'river' use a symmetric kite would prob be best.

I dont suppose the Alto is £12k ?

We quite understand the comments on the price.

All we can say is that it's a very high spec one-design boat (epoxy hull, carbon rig, high quality fittings etc all as standard), and for a big dinghy that will last a long time, and continue to remain stiff and competitive, we hope it represents good value, but we appreciate that everyone has their own picture of what 'value' is.

Regarding the name - the word 'Riverboat' does not appear anywhere on the boat itself - just X1. In due course we think people will shorten it. So don't worry about the name, just say you've bought an X1........

We will be along at Burghfield Open day tomorrow during the afternoon if anyone would like an immediate test sail! From around 1.30pm.

And then we'll be racing both boats against each other the next day at London Corinthian in Hammersmith, for all those stuck in town this coming Sunday.

We have quite a programme of visits planned but please let us know if you think a few people at your club might be interested, with two boats we can cover a good bit of ground and we've had some great visits so far to really friendly clubs like Haversham and Hollowell (....where we had Arran, the UK's 2010 No1 ranked Optmist sailor, checking out the boat and trying to persuade his Dad to have a go).

All very welcome!

You'd be surprised at how effective the pole wing wang is, it operates in a far greater angle than say the 4k or 400, no it's not 12k and it does have a carbon mast and three sails, probably better in my original version with the big sail than the cut down rig it currently enjoys, but then the smaller rig is what gives it the range at the top end. I know which one I'd rather be on in a blow, river, estuary or out in the ocean, but then there was no other option when I bought mine. I wonder how that X1 would fare up against a five oh, have they announced a PY for it yet?

In 505-friendly conditions (wiring, open water) the 505 would leave it for dead, but in gusty inland/river conditions my money would be on the X1. At Ranelagh (tidal racing on the Thames) this week the X1s destroyed everything else (Merlins, Lasers, Solos etc) and in one race would have won by several minutes sailing off 800!

Looking at the stats of the boat it's probably going to close to the 400 - PY 950

Good review, well done to all involved for a nice piece of innovative thinking, backed up with putting your money in.... would have been nice to see a cockpit shot and also read a bit more about racing performance Y&Y but I geuss some of that got lost in the 'edit'... nice concept, nice looking boat

Cockpit for getafix:

Only control led back is gnav ("Kicking strap") yellow string.

I like to take pictures of sailing, but I'd rather be sailing!
