Yes yes yes, but if you have the 10.4, why not use it when its' light, it being a better rig.
The 8.4 isn't a light wind rig, it works better for big guys in strong winds rather than light guys in all winds. Now that isn't 'sl*gging' what is a good boat I paid good money for and still own along with the rest of you, now that doesn't preclude me having an honest opinion about it. If you happen just to wish to stay in that river in Egypt for the sake of 'the class' then that's fine by me, but let's keep it real shall we?

i have to disagree with u after spending the first open this year in light winds on the sunday i think the results show that is u are the right weight for the rig it dose not matter which one it is the boats are about the same speed round the track
of cours u can get people that see its windy and are heavy suddenly change down and there go faster and the oppersite light people seeing its light and changing up and going faster but as i think it stand if ur going to enter open u have to stick with the rig for the series in less u put a separate entry in for a different rig for an event then u have 2 separate entrees for that year so it would pay on average through out the year to sail the right rig for ur weight and if u sail the rig right for u i will say agen that there is no real difference in speed so it be better sailing for every one if people just stuck to the right rig anyway if wer all going to sail togever

Graeme, just give the 100 up and get a Musto and move to a place you can sail one. Alternatively, Contenders are still cracking boats.

Graham, to be quite honest I don't have a clue what you are jibbering on about here?????? With regards your poit about the 10.2 I don't actually have that sail. I bought the boat as an 8.4 due to my weight. I also really couldn't be bothered changing mast stump etc to swap sails. I like a boat that is quick to rig. Anyway it may be something with the cut of your particular sail that is affecting it. Cheers, Keith. |

I bought the boat to handicap race, did think the big sail was probablt too big for me, but persevered with it and can cope with it up to a point but clearly not as quick as an accomplished bigger person.
I also bought the 8.4 as a change down sail, as one does if one's a windsurfer, it's what we do, and can cope with it fine when its windy. The discussion however falls upon the ability to use the 8.4 as one sail. My point is simple, it doesn't work when the wind is light and the PY now has it pretty much negated from use in a handicap fleet, so even if I want to persevere with it, which I do, as things currently stand, it's a waste of time, due to it's lack of performance in light wind, even rigging it on the big mast to see if I could get the leech to open..

In answer to whether rig tension works in light winds, i have tried it and no it didnt make any difference. I kept the shrouds in hole 2 and moved the ram right forwards and had the shrouds set tight to prebend the mast and it didnt seem to be faster. I sail with the rig very slack compared to everyone at the nationals and it was undoubtably fast upwind. Just downwind after only a week of owning the boat coming straight from lasers i was a bit slow and then the boat decided to fall apart because of my lack of prep before the nats

Graham. That's really interesting as I too bought the boat as primarily a handicap boat as in Scotland there are not many boats where you can get one design racing. I also just bought is as an 8.4 only. The handicap racing I do in windward leeward as we have an asymmetric class start at Dalgety and from my experience last year I found myself more competitive in the light stuff against things like mps's and 200's. However how losing a minute in an hour approx effects me this year remains to be seen. Where I struggle in when the wind picks up when going upwind. I'm convinced it's just my technique (or lack of) but downwind always makes things much better. I am keen to try and get or local 300 ace Ian baillie to have a go in some breeze and see if his 300 upwind technique gets it gong uphill. So I do think the boat is a creditable machine in 8.4 mode only even in the light stuff assuming you can sail a windward leeward course with other asymmetric style boats. I am getting really pee'd off with other folks saying why are people winging about handicap racing with the 100 but for those of us who don't live near the south coast there is no alternative. So if the boat is to succeed up north it has to be capable of being competitive in a mixed handicap fleet. Or else it will turn it like the Vareo up here - Not very popular. Cheers, Keith |

Hi Keith,
For windy conditions I would pull the kicker on as hard as i can (bringing all the blocks together) and the cunno to suit. A good test is, the main sheet should be quite light for the conditions as you are only pulling the sail in and not down (if that makes sense). Also i wouldn't bring the boom inside the corner of the boat, always trying to keep the boat driving along (Only exception for tactical reasons)
Some of us more Northern boats are hoping to go up and do the Lord Birkett, maybe you can make it down?
Alex

That would be a good chance for me to sail with other boats. That will be one heck of a long beat!
I am finding upwind that I find it so hard not to pinch up when things get too much but that just kills it. Need to sheet in and out more like in the mark Powell DVD to keep things moving. It's annoying when you sort of know the theory but putting it in practice is another thing altogether. I am finally getting round to upgrading the downhaul to have a bit more purchase and control this weekend. Might make a difference. No wind up here this weekend so hopefully more next week. Thanks for tips and it would be great to meet you at the birkitt. Cheers, keith |

Well my problem is compounded by the sort of courses we sail, which even though we've go the whole of the bloody English Channel to stretch our legs across, seem to end up the inevitable fetch fetch run with a lucky day being able to use the kite on two of the legs.
On another subject, I put a new kite halyard on today, supplied by RS, it's a lot shorter than the one originally fitted, seems to work better as well, stays under tension.
