I get the crease from the tack too, but i don't worry about it as soon as I get the main sheet tension on it goes away ;-)

I have tried adjusting the rig and it made no difference to the hooking at the top of the mainsail. The only thing that helps is loosening top batten right off as mentioned in previous posts..... |

Yes I thought so, I have one, it's a total dog of a sail for lightwind, in fact I'd go as far as to say it's a total dog of a sail period, unless you're some clinically obese ape in strong winds.. I haven't spent a great deal of time on it, in my experience a dog is always a dog and not much you can do to alter its dogedness, just buy the big sail and use that, it's kind of a thermo nuclear option and works a dream when it's light, arse backwards I know, but given it was developed by said clinically obese strong wind lovin' ape, hardly surprising.

GRF, the sail is fine... in light winds yes it is a bit on the tight side but as soon as you get a solid 6 knots of wind it is as good as any sail. How can the man who will not hike possibly suggest the big sail to be a good idea!?

Interesting observation GRF but how would you explain the fact that 28 of the 38 boats that beat you in the Nationals last year were on 8.4' s ? Maybe it was simply the fact that they didn't spend the entire weekend with their masts stuck firmly in the Parkstone mud !!
With due respect I don't think their were too many 'obese apes' on the water at that event and of the boats that were lapping you I can't actually think of any. In my view having used both rigs the 8.4 is the sweeter of the 2 and has been repeatedly demonstrated, in the right hands can be equally fast in all conditions. Sad way to leave a Class GRF but good luck with whatever you decide to sail next. C |

I picked up my 100 from RS last weekend, rigged it last sunday, had a short sail in no wind. Looking forward to to this weekend. Being a big lad I have gone for the big sail and I'm looking forward to hiking hard.

I haven't left it yet and the Nationals I was at was windy all the time, y'all have yet to meet me in light wind and I guarantee it would be a different outcome, but not with that 8.4 rag I'm sorry, but it is a dog, given it is designed presumably with lighter riders in mind, or should have been, fair enough it works in a blow, but sucks otherwise. It is too tight leeched, stiff and un-tuneable not particularly assisted by the fact the mast stiffens up being shorter. I wouldn't dream of using it under 7 knots. Whereas the 10.4 blades off nicely, is eminently tuneable, just a bit beyond 70 kgs of righting moment above 10 knots, then why should it matter? If everyone is on the same sail, dog or not it's equal, just don't try taking on Lasers in 5-6 knots with it. Edit: Anyone over 80 kgs is obese, in case you were wondering..

Grf, if you cant take on the lasers with the 8.4 in every wind condition then im sure the nationals would have been a very similar outcome if there was no wind. Dont throw the toys out the pram and sl*g off a really great boat in frustration.
Anyway, who cares about beating lasers, its a one design fleet, we dont need to race against lasers at our events. Although by the sounds of it we would be better off in them ourselves, right? Thought not.... At only 70kgs have you tried the 7.4 rig? sure with less roach the leach wont be as hard to control in the light stuff and you may be able to sail fast in some breeze too then. Negative attitudes like yours are what can kill a class so for the sake of all of the happy 8.4 owners can you please leave the rig alone, we all know it works fine. Even if its not perfect who cares, as i have said we are all in the same boats! |

Gentlemen, I seem to have touched a raw nerve with GRF. For the sake of clarification the 8.4 sail is great in anything over 5 kts and I`m just looking at ways to cover the bit where all sh*t goes down tide at the same speed in no wind. Also just to flag up I humped the lasers even with the new handicap in knack all breeze with my hooked leach 8.4. So to my original question anybody tried more rig tension in drifters and pre bend from the mast chock? Sorry GRFs not enjoying his boat but from my view the RS100 is the most fun you can have with your trousers on.

GRF,
I'm around 67kgs and I think the 8.4 is a great sail. I wish I was a bit on the heavier side for it when the breeze picks up but I actually find it superb in light winds except for the annoying hook descibed before.
Some of my best results last year were in light winds when the mustos couldnt wire all the time.
Its just time on the water to get familiar with it and I suspect you are giving up way too early. Stick with it man and your bound to improve.
