Sailing has imposed this lot on the english language although these phrases have the advantage of having actually meant something.
Copper-bottomed
Cut and run Edging forward Fathom out Full to the gunwales Get underway Give a wide berth Go by the board Hand over fist Hard and fast High and dry In the offing Know the ropes On your beam ends Panic stations Plain sailing Push the boat out Shipshape and Bristol fashion Shake a leg Shiver my timbers Slush fund Taken aback Tell it to the marines The bitter end The cut of your jib Three sheets to the wind Tide over Walk the plank .......any others
is there an elephant in the room? Edited by GK.LaserII - 17 Apr 11 at 11:19am |

One of my hates is at New Year everyone sings "for the sake of Auld Lang Syne" when it should be "for Ald Lang Syne" since it means for old times' sake!
The other pet hate is engineers - refuse engineers (bin men), sanitary engineers (plumbers) and especially software engineers who are usually salesmen. It derides the real graduate engineers who are clever folk and us software designers/developers who get given the "engineer" label with a derisory sneer. Edited by patj - 17 Apr 11 at 7:43pm |

As an Engineer myself (an proud to be able to use a captial E) I think that the following quote sums us up:-
The Optimist says that the cup is half full
The Pesimist says that the cup is half empty
The Engineer says the cup is twice the size it needs to be

If they are not engineers then they are consultants......

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
