I think Graeme's right, all this hanging off the side nonsense shouldn't be allowed. There should be a seperate handicap in all classes for people whole sail like a gentlemen and don't allow their backsides to protrude from the boat  Thumbs Up

Oh yes, I am proficient at the elegant lean. Why are those strap things on the floor?

Clive you've got to stop all that hiking out hard (in a drifter) nonesense, it's not good for you, ask that James, it gives your knees a hernia, if it doesn't do it to the other bit..

corrected that for you GRF Wink

@ Clive.... BTW what was the "special" prize???

TimG: I won a pair of Zhik gloves - reward for cooling the mast top down in the ogin for a second plus parking on top of a mark in the zero-wind shadow of the 8 boats I'd just got water on. Double doh! Ironically, I won a much needed Burgee for my 6th overall - its predecessor had reverted to a simple radio antenna on a previous encounter with the bottom of the pond. So would have been wittier to award them the other way around.

They were great prizes all around, sponsored by the wonderful Guildford Marine. We look forward to lots of Icons, D1s and 100s next year at the Frensham Frenzy, weekend after the dinghy show.

Oh but there are special classes for those disinclined to hike - some call them "keelboats" or "yachts". As my brother makes a living on them, I like to call them "floating caravans"

A quick scan of the YY table, if I read it right suggests 11 two handed adults dinghy classes had 50plus boats at their nationals last year. Of those 5 had pole kites and 3 each no kite or asymmetrics. So if around a quarter of the population prefer two handed boats without kites then it makes sense to consider them.

Exactly  Jim.... you’ve got it ….particularly if the boat is  as fast or possibly faster (time will tell) than a Phantom around a light wind course - a good benchmark for many - and as fast or faster than a Tasar in a blow and straightforward to set-up and sail.

Asymetrics (with everything) as the modern 'standard'  is fine but they  do not suit every location or crew combination.  I’m not knocking asymetrics – who knows our next one may very well have one, but that part of the market is already rather well served with abundant choice.    We thought ‘when was the last ‘decent’ 2-person, 2-sail  class developed…. Well I reckon it was in the mid-70’s with the Tasar – a very long time ago.

Many do value the simplicity of 2-sail classes and so do their crew … and today that means you can be really quite quick as well - in all conditions.   Our 'market' segment is a minority one .... just like the asymetric sector ....

3 things Mike and I don´t want to hijack this well endorsed, often qualified thread:
 1). don´t forget the development class National 12, (DCB, and others developed from "F'ing Boat" come to mind);
2). if the asymetrics part of the market is very well served with abundant choice, why do you state that its market is a "minority" one. Asymetrics are found in cats, vortex, ICs, MPS and other skiffs as the rule, RS Varios RS 400s, 100s, and and and... This covers quite a few different (speed) classes of commercially available boat. I would say that a large proportion of "modern" designs have been developed with the asymetric spi in mind, either as an add-on or as the full-monty.

3). The ICON would also be the boat of choice for me if it had been developed earlier. The N12 (even a Chapter) wouldn´t have carried our combined crew weight. Good luck with the whole thing!!!!!

Pass the skiff, man!

Hi Slippery

Perhaps I should have said 'one design' as the N12  has been reinventing itself over the years

I was using Jim C's analysis about the numbers doing it at championships .... a bit tongue in cheek of course as some of my asymetric friends do think there is no alternative sometimes.  My real point was that since the Tasar the 2-sail, 2 -person one design segment has been rather ignored.

Singlehanders ... now they do have plenty of choice for one sail or two sail, 'traditional' or 'modern' designs but for those who want the 2-crew equivalent of a Blaze and Phantom, Solo, 300, Supernova,  even laser and you name it etc there is much much less (particulary modern) choice.

Icon changed a great deal since you saw the concept boat at last years show - if you are over here or visiting sometime get in touch and come and try.

On small restricted waters it is very hard to make a kite boat work effectively.

We have a number of very good sailors who choose to sail kite boats. Their boat handling is top notch (far better than mine) yet most of the time they find themselves behind me on the water (let alone on corrected time).

The reason, restricted water you need a boat that is nimble and accelerates well. The Phantom as a single hander fits that bill very well as does a Laser with an 8.1 rig. Double handed we don;t really have anything. I am trying to persuade our committee to invite Mike and the iCon up to the club to see how it performs. From what I have seen so far I think it would perform very well indeed.

Hi Clive,
I was actually going to go. Now I know it's suitable for the D-One I will go next year.

Sorry Mike for the hijack, that's the last.

He's got the kite up hasn't he? looks a bit breezy to be a total drifter, don't think i could handle that much wind at that point of sailing, certainly not sat that far forward and the main sheeted that far in, without a weight jacket..

And what are all those white things on the Gnav..

And why is he wearing his wetsuit half way up his thighs..

And hasn't he heard of regain? LOL

Graeme - I've posted answers on the 100 forum page; perhaps we can resume in our rightful place and stop hijacking an Icon thread
