... don't know the state of the blaze or other circuits ....
See www.blaze-sailing.com (The CA site) The first formal event in 2011 .... by sheer co-incidence is, you guessed it, on the East coast and next year our 2012 Nationals will be at Brightlingsea as well - for the second time in 7 years. Yes we are a younger class being around for about 15 years and cannot yet draw 80+ to our Nationals - 50 is nearer the mark currently but we are growing. As many acknowledge both boats have their respective virtues and one or both boats may suit you very well. Ultimately it really is your choice and we really encourage you to sail both, and possibly others as well, first. Plenty have bought boats over the years without trying first - and it can be an expensive way to really find out whether a particular boat suits YOU. Talk to the CA's for owner contacts in your area - Good luck ! Mike L. |

At that weight I'd say Finn all the way aswell. We have a few at or club and
They all do great in the hcp racing. Lovely built and can carry The heavy weight really well. |

Here is one for Y&Y In 2007 I did the Y&Y test for 8.1, Phantom and Finn representing the Phantom class. 3 short races in very light breeze, with Steve C in the 8.1 and a very nice chap in the Finn (sorry forgotten his name) and then we all swapped boats for race 2 and 3.
It would be great if Y&Y could do another comparison this time between the Blaze/Halo, Phantom and Finn. 3 fine boats but it would be nice to see how they compare against eachother, hopefully this time in alittle more breeze.

8.1 was just rubbish, Finn was a lovely boat but the Phantom came out on top in terms of performance and practacality and I believe everyone on the day was shocked at actually how good a boat the Phantom is.

Beardy,
One very serious consideration is the state of your knees. Having sailed a Phantom for a while I can advise that there is a lot of kneeling to be done down wind. The Blaze seems to be a similar proposition with the Finn being the only boat deep enough to sail 'in' properly. Essential that, as suggested elsewhere, you give them all a test sail.

.... In fact to be fair you will need to use your knees in the Blaze as well as the Phantom to some extent - all depends on your technique and sailing style. But if you have decent knee pads it is not really the problem that some like to suggest. Many of us use the same ones generally as Contender sailors, simple, not developed for 'image' but they work well and are highly functional.

alternatively get a comfy 'deep dish' phantom with thwart and all, simply sit down and enjoy the downwind ride...

Have to say when I was considering my next dinghy (shortlist was Phantom, Blaze, RS100, D1) and test sailed the Phantom it literally took seconds for me to decide I had to have one. It was probably perfect conditions (force 2 to 3) in flat water, but that is exactly where much of my racing seems to take place. Not knocking the others, cause I didn't try them, but I didn't need too either... |
