not sure if this has come up be for but i read somewhere of people going on about making a moth for bigger people id a bigger boat bigger sails ect
i look at the moth and think id like a go at that and hear that some of the guys sailing them are up to 90kg then i woke up and realised that i am nearly a 100kg after a late night and a burger but surly with the design of the boat surely all u would have to do is add a bigger sail bigger foils to add more lift and off u go. or am i missing something? i know for one if i had any spear cash id get one be a right giggle and something to keep me interested on Saturdays when theres no racing untill u get the hang of it sorry if someone has already said this could find anything and dident know where to put it |

I recently picked up the book about 'Icarus' the foiling Tornado used in speed records.
All a very long time ago now, but the elements of foiling were in place then, using much cheaper materials, aluminium foils etc. A lot on this forum not even born then! A foiling cat could probably be done quite cheaply now. A cat is the obvious way to go, to get enough non-foiling speed to allow the use of smaller foils. The book is worth a read if you see it in the library. Also interesting to note those 'record' speeds (high 20's of knots) are now achieved by B14's etc. |

Ah, but are they achieved over a measured course?

An interesting point, there is a big difference between peak speed on a wave and average over 500m or whatever. But when did anyone last put a skiff on a measured distance course? Would there be any point, as the speed records are much higher now?
We could extract GPS data I suppose, anyone done that for average over 500m in any direction? (do we have 20knts of fred drift yet?) |

I believe the C-Classes tried airbourne foils quite recently and the boats were slower with the foils on than without. Think there may have been a marginal difference upwind but downwind the non-foil boat was a fair bit quicker. There was an article in $eahorse about it where they showed the performance plots up and downwind.
The fundamental thing is that to get extra lift, you take a hit in drag at higher speeds, therefore I think the problem with scaling up a moth to suit bigger people will be that it will always be slower. I think the moths hit a good power to weight ratio with minimal drag and as soon as you increase the power, your going to up the drag and lose performance.
How close performance-wise have dinghies actually got to windsurfers over the years? I think you'll be funadamentally chasing the same problem as you start scaling foilers up.

Three years have passed since this, and further to the discussion going on about the N12 and it's T foil, combined with my interest in jacking the V2 hull up on foils, which if it could be done would be a silly easy boat to use, my question is where is all the development at the moment, the Tomohawk didn't progress, Mothy's are still the province of the light but highly skilled type.
Cat's are obvious still at it, I'm wondering just how feasible and how easy it would be to get hold of the necessary kit to do it and at what cost? |

I do hope so. It would certainly increase forum traffic.
