Yeah well that's all well and good but this is nothing about what I know about sailing on inland water, which might surprise you, it's what I know about marketing and human psychology.. Which, wether you like it or not, is a fair amount.

The boat, however well it does, it would do a whole lot better not being pidgeon holed, it's bad enough sailing is a small niche, an ageing niche, of tightfisted, bearded, socks in their sandal wearing sash chord replacement operatives, there is no point going for a micro niche.

Just done a bit of estimating, and reckon the X1 should perform to around PY 940. Maybe better in the light stuff. 10% quicker than a Kestrel.

That'll make it pretty unique amongst symmetric hikers. Got to be a niche there - great for beating against a foul tide - a pain in most slow hikers.

The first two things I read about this boat, on this forum and on the site included some sort of form of the phrase "this boat is not for you". That may be the case, but you don't have to shoot yourself in the foot with potential customers by using this phrase as psychologically there may be a tendhency for this to imbed in your mind. Why not emphasise the strong points of the boats, not it's potential failings? If I was ever to sail inland on restricted waters my initial first glance impression was "this boat is not for me", may still ring true in my head. I'm not going to jump up and down and start pledging loyalty to the ICON, but Mike and Peaky have went a lot more further in promoting that boat more positively.

Why can't some of you guys come up with a 400 killer, similar concept but lighter, more modern, carbon rig, quicker and DON'T put too much mark up on it so you can undercut RS on price? The market is screaming out for it, all you need to do is read the "RS400 proposed changes thread". You'd capture quite a few pi$$ed off 400 sailors at the moment. I'd do it myself but don't have enough bloody time in the day to do what I attempt to do already....

A can of petrol would be a very effective 400 killer Wink And the heat given off could be used to heat a workshop for loving restoring old GP14s, Enterprises and Merlins Smile
Best wishes from deep in the woods

The concept of the riverboat is great - just look at how much attention (and money) has been lavished on old, narrow Merlins, putting carbon rigs on them, to make them great river boats - and I doubt they sail off rivers very often at all. So maybe there are enough people wanting a larger, faster boat for sailing on the Thames, and at places like Salcombe. But I think using it in the name does limit things. However, the idea of saying to people that it might not be for them could be OK. Topper tried to sell the Iso as a really easy boat to sail - if you could sail an Ent, you could sail one. When people couldn't, boats got sold cheap, prices dropped like a stone and hardly any new boats were sold. At least by selling to the right market, you get customer satisfaction.

To my mind it seems to be a bit too quick for a river boat. When I am racing in a mixed fleet on our small water I like to be in the same ball park as the opposition. On the rare ocassions I have sailed my 300 in a Club pursuit race the early starters have got a couple of laps in before I start and are well in the groove, making it difficult to play catch up.

Maybe, though, once people see that boats on rivers can be quick (maybe the boat would be fun against the A raters!) other new designs will come along, and river racing will get quicker in general, just as it did when the post war boats made the old clinker lugsailed dinghies seem slow and old fashioned.
On the other hand, it may be that people who are looking for speed are sailing on more open water, and the river sailors are far more into close racing and tactics. I guess we'll find out over the next couple of years. Looking forward to it.

I'd suggest that the best hope for this boat is that a number of clubs (inland/rivers) adopt it instead of sailing a mish mash of new and old merlins etc.

Also -  lots of us we spend much of our time sailing in light breezes over the summer months - not just in evening races but also at weekends. As a general handicap boat it might prove to be great.

I dont like the bow though - its a bit Otter/Gull/Comet Trio (same designer ?). I'm sure that its like that for a good reason but it just makes the boat look a bit old fashioned (as opposed to the rest of it).

Perhaps if we all worked out the number of times we sailed in light and strong winds (those who sail predominantly inland and not much over the winter) we may find that it is ideally suited to some of us ?
