Not quite like treacle, but more dense, yes. What's not to understand? One cubic Metre of air at 30degreesC has a mass of 1.17kg, a cubic metre of air at 0degreesC has a mass of 1.29Kg. That's a 10% difference. For the same speed, a cubic metre of 0degreesC air flowing over your sails will impart more energy than a cubic metre of 30degreesC air flowing over your sails, because it is heavier.
