Lol i love how ppl role this one out, i guess if you go to the north pole the air is like treacle? nothing to do with air density all to do with wind shear, i think if i heard the RO say that i would have been concerned  


Not quite like treacle, but more dense, yes.

What's not to understand? One cubic Metre of air at 30degreesC has a mass of 1.17kg, a cubic metre of air at 0degreesC has a mass of 1.29Kg. That's a 10% difference.

For the same speed, a cubic metre of 0degreesC air flowing over your sails will impart more energy than a cubic metre of 30degreesC air flowing over your sails, because it is heavier. There's simply more stuff going round your sails.

but if air was as 'thick' as treacle would we really sail faster?

Isn't that where you get the term "blowing 110%", makes perfect sense to me
