I use them to control the stiffness of the upper section and hence the gust response - upwind.

I can't think of many, if any, kiteless and hiking boats that have uppers. They don't even bother on the NS14

Hi
yes there are no uppers, so it is similar to a 200 etc in that sense. Except it has a bespoke carbon mast and fully battened square head, so it should prove very responsive and controllable via the downhaul and kicker. The main is fairly large so I think will probably be set in a different way to some other boats, but don't think uppers are needed. |

Continued so as not to be timed out...
It is my belief that the square head changes the roles and interactions of the mast and sail as the sail is now able to do more of the work. Downhaul tension is critical but the ability to vary mast stiffness less so. At least, that's my thinking, time will tell! |

Shouldn't really be necessary if the mast is right. It does make an argument for interchangeable topmasts though. |

Peaky - thanks for that reply. I was forgetting the square head.
When do you think yours will hit the water at Chew?
Jim C - I was thinking how the range in crew weights will be accomodated. Perhaps different sized rigs... nah just kidding.

Get the mast & sail right and have plenty of purchase on the cunningham/downhaul. Uppers allow you to apply prebend to flatten the sail but that also reduces the gust response, so swings & roundabouts. B14s used to use the uppers to apply prebend, now we tend to keep them as slack as possible without losing the topmast downwind to let the right 'work' and use the downhaul to control bend & blade the head off as it breezes up.

Should have mine at Chew in a few weeks. Probably around the time of the dinghy show. Just depends what minor changes there are to make etc.

I'll also be doing the Easter Chase at Rock and (depending on crew availability) the Exmoor Beastie in mid March.
