On a more charitable theme, I do wonder if the local council really understand what most of us have already concluded, ie that watching sailing from the beach just doesn't work? I suspect they probably don't understand that sailing rarely works as a spectator sport, and in their naivete probably believe that can make some money from selling tickets to sailing types like us. On a less charitable theme, I wish I could be the one that tells them how out of touch they are!

The helicopter idea is a great one - you could have fun blowing 49ers over with the down draft...

If we all clubbed together and hired a big boat, gin palace, then it "broke down" we'd be stuck in the sailing area. Result!

The funny thing is I have seen it work. At the 1999 Cherub Champs I had to sit out a day because my helm was at a wedding or something. It was at New Quay in Wales (a super venue for a moderate sized fleet). New Quay harbour is basically a breakwater sticking out from the side of Cardigan Bay, and the breakwater is open to the public. So you sail off the beach, past the breakwater and you're immediately in the open water sailing area, and one end of the course was able to be really close in. So anyway, I wandered out to the end of the breakwater to watch the racing, and the boats came out of the harbour and started racing, all, being Cherubs, in different bright and easily distinguishable colours. It very soon became obvious to me that the general holiday makers out on the breakwater were watching the racing: and if you listened into their conversation (I know, bad manners) they were actually following individual boats, which, being a smallish fleet and very distinctive colours was very easy to do. ISTR even hearing groans if the boat they were following went for a swim and so on. Ever since then I have been convinced that sailing can work as a spectator sport if conditions are just right, and an Olympics medla race is as close to the circumstances I saw that day as you are going to get, other than the white hulls... Really need boats painted in National colours as well as spinnakers I think. |

I think the new rules they implemented at the last Sail For Gold where all sails carried the National Flag will help. Also at the last Olympic games they had National Flag Spinnakers which would also help.

Jim- thing is that long breakwaters are good for spectating- as are long promenades (Dundee, where I remeber throngs watching Ultra 30s- seriously, how did they muck that up so badly that it died- for example) whilst beaches are always going to be that much further away unless they're very steeply sloping. A bit of elevation also helps- a brekwater might not be much, but it'll often be enough to make a big big difference to what can be clearly seen.
The gardens in question appear to be here: http://goo.gl/maps/akLs
Is the racing area actually going to be anywhere near there?
As for paying? if they were to figure out some way of having safe spectating from the Portland Harbour breakwaters with the racing close by, I'd cheerfully pays me money.

Last I heard was that the Match Racing would be in Newtons Cove which is the bit the gardens over look. That's about all you would see other than a procession of boats leaving/entering the Portland Harbour. I can see there's an argument that a match race between two boats is easier to follow for the general public. I know the 49ers had some test races in this cove and the view would have been excellent. I don't know what the outcome was. It's a bit shifty in there. I think they are also planning a large screen in the gardens. |

Might pay to be on the water, but not on shore. Blatant profiteering IMO. Didn't have to pay to watch 31st or 32nd America's Cup.

As you go into the reception area of the WPNSA there's a display that shows the racing areas for the Olympics. If I remember correctly there are 2 areas in Portland Harbour and 3 out in the middle of Weymouth Bay - so nowhere near Nothe Gardens then.
The breakwaters might be your best bet, or the cliffs on the opposite side of the Bay along from Durdle Door (but carry some high power binoculars!).
