currently waiting to see if a friend's girlfriend from the US, travelling to Falkirk, who landed at Stansted when her flight was diverted from Heathrow mid afternoon, can actually get any form of transport to Cambridge. Main trouble with this is that the Stansted-Cambridge trains are a Cross Country (XC) service to Birmingham, and the inbound trains are all up the creek.

4 x 4's would be fine if all the silly fools in rear wheel drive and summer tyres didn't realise their limitations.
It's unbelievable driving in this country in the snow, what I can't understand is why it is so much worse than it used to be. Could be just the sheer weight of traffic, which then clogs the roads and prevents the gritters getting anywhere. It was a nightmare this afternoon, the M20 a slight hill on the road to dover docks, just wedged solid, not a sign of the gritters. Now back in the day, the old dover road, which used to be a favorite sight to photograph the Monte Carlo Rallye minis coming through in the snow, was never blocked, the moment it snowed or there was even a hint, it got gritted as it was then the main arterial road to Dover Docks and a much much steeper hill with a hairpin bend (hence being a favorite spot for photographers).

It's those groups of unsually teenage boys who jump into the road in front of your car to hurl snow balls at it, grinning like lunatics, not realising that in these conditions you just aren't going to be able to stop. I think the snow must freeze their brain cells.
The snow and ice has certainly wiped the smile and over confidence off the faces of our local BMW drivers. (one has even been out and swaped his for a 4x4!). |

Hurrah! My crew has just told me that a wasp among the Xmas decs has stung her and her finger has swollen up so badly she can't sail! Much better excuse than 'too cold'. Surely the reason cars are so useless on snow these days is that tyres are much wider and have higher speed ratings (= harder rubber), both of which can have a disastrous effect on grip.
I once had two examples of the same model car in succession. The first had 175 width tyres, SR rating, and was fantastic in the snow. The second had tyres just the next size up - 185 - and HR - three speed ratings up - and couldn't even get along my flat road in minimal snow.
The winter tyres I had in Germany were Q-rated - that's max speed 99mph, compared to S - 112, H - 130, or Z on my current car - 150+
On the right tyres, modern BMW's are pretty good - much better than of old - as they've shifted the weight distribution aft. Doesn't help much at all on hard 150 mph rubber, though.

Even relatively cheap cars these days have big wide low profile tyres. It is funny to see someone in a rear wheel drive car completely failing to move though. Had a friend stay overnight, she was travelling from San Francisco to Falkirk, her plane got diverted from Heathrow (whilst they were on final approach- cabin lights were dimmed and cabin crew in seats!) to Stansted. Took her eight hours to get out of the airport. She's off on trains to the north now. |

Subaru outback. The only car to have in this weather.
Hunts has become a permanent lump of ice. There was sailing allowed at Grafham yesterday, but the red 'water closed' flag is up today. This is probably because it is -7 on the wind chill reading. Oh - stop press - it is because there is too much ice on the slipway to launch the committee boat! |

The lack of sailing is rubbish! Parts of spinnaker are frozen so I don't really want to chance it going out.
Landrovers are the way forward, went out with dad in his yesterday, was an epic time laughing at all of the idiots in their 2 wheel drives. Went to a pub on the forest as well, in the car park there were 5 discoverys a series 3 defender and us. Best photo ever |

true about the landy, but I meant just a car for road driving. Outback has all wheel drive! I've only sailed three times this year anyway, thanks to injury, so I'm used to it, worse luck....  |

/\ 50 weeks? We've had 12 weeks of snow this year. All of Jan and Feb and then the 3 more this December. Fortunately I've managed to find some snow chains on Amazon. If I don't even need to use them it'll still be worth while.
