Well everything affects everything else. But if you think about the amount that crew weight varies on everything but Olympic classes where they body build/diet to the required weight it can't be that critical... |

As a potential purchaser it is just a point of interest.
I have had a very good experience with the quality of one of my boats which is epoxy but a very bad experience with a previous boat built using vinylester. This could have been due to a fault in the build process of course.
Very happy for Mike to take any decision that he deems appropriate. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

In my limited experience it is usually NOT the resin choice that is selected, though it is obviously quite possible to get that wrong, it is the way it is used. The Tasar was the first production foamed boat anywhere and did and still does use polyester - it is light and has stood the test of time very well indeed. But it is well designed and uses the materials involved well. The NS's we started with have another 35 years of development, not just in terms of shape, but in respect to build materials and use. The structure, weight and performanceof any hull is only partly down to resin ... the other key is the build materials employed (foam/glass etc) and the way they are used. In addition resins vary enormously and the division is more than just simply polyester/vinylester/epoxy - there are many less obvious variations.
The rig is light and we don't carry
all the complexity and weight of a spinnaker system.... and the hull design and
build has learnt a lot from the NS14 pre-curser which was excellent in every respect. I personally don't think we need to be this
light frankly as the hull is easily driven and we have a very efficient
rig. Put it in context however - MR's often carry 25kg of
correctors these days, Phantoms are not much smaller than Icon and can even be
lighter than their minimum weight rule of I think 62kg for hull. We might
want the boat to be a tad heavier yet .... but only in the right places and
where it is needed. |

For boats like the Icon, the boat will sit 1cm higher out the water for every 30kg saved. It depends on the underwater shape, but that figure wod be about right for the 400 as well. So you do haveto design the hull around the expected weight, but aim for a low weight at the design stage. |

Early ones had an external skin of kevlar/epoxy - I'm told they're quite coveted.
Brief article on why epoxy is used in the 49er here: http://www.49er.org/content/view/30/88/
Good luck with the NS14, sweet hull shape (though for aesthetic reasons I'd hugely prefer to see a fair curve in gunwhales plan view rather than the 'corners') and lots of care going into it which is good to see.

Some very early Tasars had amounts of Kevlar but it proved very difficult in production and was later dropped. The hulls are or at least should all be polyester ! (perhaps there is the odd 'bandit' - who knows ? ;-) Early ones are sought after because they were known to have been built very carefully and are generally lighter - wanted because of their weight rather that anything else. We have no hang-ups about any material and already build in epoxy - let us see what is needed or best for Icon once these pre-production hulls are out there. Hull shapes .... huge subject and not enough space or time and we have settled that one already. Icon was based on more recent NS thinking but the hull is significantly longer and a bit wider with a tad more volume and rocker. Mike L. |

I think the Icon idea is great, i would be interested to see how it goes on restricted sailing areas such as small puddles and rivers where fast roll tacking is key. A modern take on the enterprise/Albacore, i think is great. Any idea how much they are going to be yet? I am not in the market at present but it looks like a great boat to buy when my wife has decided to start sailing again in a few years.

+1 - I have to agree that the corners in the gunwhales do slightly spoil what is otherwise a great looking hull.

A balancing vote for the gunwale corners - function over form every time, or at least when it gives a nice functional look!

I've absolutely no interest in this spinnaker-less waste of good water space, but I'm intrigued as to just why it's been going on so long, why does it take this time?
I ask not just for my usual irritating entertainment, could be i shall come to look at this post with some regret going forward, but seriously what could possible cause such a delay? New Motorways have been built since this thread started.
