Also don't forget most people keep at least sets of sails on the go.
I have a best set for nationals/opens
a club set
and an old jib and kite for blasting/training/spare.
If you are driving 150miles to an event that matters, you need spares!
So the cost of changeover is more.
Or at least people will keep their first new style sails for a long time as spares.
Hopefully I can get another club main cheaply next year now my rig is obsolete.
I don't think people will want to chop and change between new and old too much, I can't see the rig settings being the same, who wants to fell the mast before every windy club race just to change the spreaders?

Most people? Really? I'm less than convinced.

Most people who travel do. I certainly usually have two suits on the go at any one time.

Well that's two people.
Seriously its not the norm in any of the classes I've been involved with. Mostly non SMOD boats admittedly where you hope the new rags are an improved design. You might keep old sails as emergency spares once you have them rather than throw them away, but little more than that. I've certainly never come across anyone who buys two sets of sails for their new boat.

Maybe there's a cheque book sailing attitude to sails in some SMOD classes where new sails are bought at the drop of a hat. I haven't especially noticed it amongst our Lasers though, some of whom are (masters) world class.

How would you notice with a Laser - at the drop of a hat the look knackered anyway  LOL  The Laser is the most sail expensive single hander out there in my experience

At risk of fred drift, Lasers often have Rooster or other rep sails for club racing and official ones for class racing.
Fair enough, not everyone keeps multiple sails on the go, but it does make sense not to beat your new sails to death in a windy club race which will be won or lost by staying upright.
A look at the for sale ads will often find boats with two suits 'one only used for nationals' or similar.
Even people who buy new boats will often keep a set from the old boat.

I know plenty of folk who keep a "race" spinnaker. Some have a race "jib" as well.

I have an 'open' set of sails for the 505.  They are now getting to the point where they will be our club set and we buy some more (Or though Olly doesn't know this yet)  I always have a club suit and open suit of sails.
